Default S & W 686 suffix

What is the meaning of the suffix after the model #686 on the gun itself ?
Are there any suffix #'s to avoid ? Is a higher # better ?

the suffix -2 -3 -4 etc.... are for changes made during it's production run. most changes are small "adjustments" such as slightly different sights, internal trigger lock, or some other change from the original. the 686 is a well made gun in any configuration, and there have been no issues with any suffix.
