i need to winterize my 40 horse mercury--think its an 87 model--last fall, i paid a marina place to winterize it.. The place closed, and i dont want to bring my boat allthe way home to get someone local to do it. Does anyone know what winterizing is? i know he put Sta-bil in the fuel, but dont know what else he did. If anyone has ideas, please let me know!!!! thanks guys steve

Drain the lower unit until all of the water is out (if any happens to be in there) Then fill it back up with oil. All I did with mine was make sure all of the water was out of the lower unit. I also kept a on-board trickle charger on it all winter.

Run the engine with the gas feed off until it stops, out of fuel. Pull the fuel line off the carb and drain the fuel tank.
Also, pull the plugs and put a teaspoon of oil in each cylinder. Slowly crank the engine over two full cycles. Put the plugs back in bu don''t torque them down (just finger tight.) Pops |

I don't own an outboard but know my way around an engine. I would do the following which has already been mentioned.
Drain the tank, fire up the engine till it dies, check for a drain on the bowl of the carb, I doubt there is one but if so open and drain any remaining gas. Drain any and all water. Don't think this is a problem with outboards, should be dry. Keep the battery on a trickle charger. Oil is a good idea, if you want the extra protection, do it. I have never used stabil, I hear its a good product, I just don't believe in additives--just my .02 |
