I loved to read everyone's opinion on this issue and I can tell that pretty much everyone has both styles of guns. That can provide you with your answer. However, in my experience as a law enforcement officer, a firearms instructor, and an avid gun collector there is nothing easier than a Glock. Point and pull.
I have a Glock 21C, 30, 22, 26, 19, and 27. I just bought my first 1911 a few days ago and got a Kimber Custom II for $500, bnib. (Had to steal that one). I have taught a ton of new LEOs to shoot as well as some non-LEOs and the easiest gun to teach someone to shoot is the Glock. The lack of "safety" on the Glocks is a misconception. It is not correct that there is no external safeties on the glock, however the "safety" on the trigger may as well be useless, IMO. But what is a safety? A safety is a mechanical device that can and will fail. It is best not to rely on a safety. It is easier to teach people to use the "safety" between their ears and keep their finger off the trigger until they are ready to fire. For a combat handgun, I would choose the high capacity and simplicity of the Glock. For a battle handgun when the handgun is not your main weapon, I might choose the 1911. For all intensive purposes, you can't go wrong with either. Just spend some bonding time with it and get used to shooting. And, take some shooting classes and learn about the correct way to shoot. |

Lets see the score in my house is Colt 2 Glock 0. I have had colts or clones for close to 30 years. 1 mind you 1 I had a feed problem someone over polished the throat. MY fault didn't check well enough before taking it home. I have fired the Tupperware and was not overwhelmed (yes it shot quite well) more felt recoil. Being old fashioned it did NOT feel right. I don't need 85 rounds to obtain my objective. 2 or 3 well placed rounds will suffice. If you can shoot both do so and buy the one you shoot the best with. If not Go for a colt clone Rock Island makes a good one so does taurus. They are easy to sell if you don't like it. NOT going to happen but the option is there.
I can't believe glocknut hasn't been here yet. |

Its an old thread... i must have missed it.... ![]() This whole "Glock vs 1911" debate that rages on over and over on this forum as well as others has a strong similarity to another subject... Backhoes with Wobblestick controls vs 3 stick with foot pedals. Those who first learn to use wobble sticks proficiently CANNOT run the 3 stick with foot pedal set up worth beans. Those are the 1911 fanatics. They hate switching. Glock owners on the other hand can run either one. They are like the 3 stick/foot pedal operators. They prefer the 3 stick but can get right on the wobble stick set up and run it without issue...they don't allways like it as much but they can do it. That's the way it is. 1911 owners are limited but Glock owners can shoote them all without complaint. Perhaps Glock owners are more talented shooters? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() mike gn

thats a very interesting analogy glocknut...
you might say that glock owners are much like these kids that can tune import cars, while 1911 owners are like those old timers that like chevy small blocks. the small block mechanic cannot work on cars with computers and sensors, but can make a 350 into a mean street rod, while these kids can take a 125 horse power import and adjust a few things and swap out some sensors and put a turbo on it and make it run with the chevy, OR they could work on the chevy if they had too. i can shoot glocks well, i also can shoot 1911's well. i like the feel of both. but i like the 1911 feel better, not so much the grip, not so much the angle, but the balance is what i like. the other thing i like is that i know how to completely break down a 1911, but i can only field strip a glock. if i knew how to take glocks all the way down, and knew what the innerds looked like, it would be a harder choice for me. i want one of each now ~john |

I've been thinking alot lately about a Glock 20c
Thats a fullsized 10mm with factory compensator built in to it. Glocks built in comp works really well! I have a 19c 9mm with the factory comp. It honestly feels like i am shooting a 22lr pistol in both recoil and muzzle flip. The hotter the ammo the better. I can only imagine how well that comp would work on the 10mm? I think it would be pretty nice! And Glocks 10mm does not have the chamber problems of their 40s. The 10mm has real nice thick chamber... The local gunshop says they cannot get one. Supposedly Glock is way behind? I dunno... but it sure stays on my mind. mike gn

I was talking to a police officer and he told me about one of his fellow officers
who had a Glock and he pulled it out of his holster when it discharged luckly not hitting anyone. After hearing that and my 6 yrs in the Army as a unit armorer I'd stay with the 1911! |

I don't own a Glock so my input will only be 50%. However, my Springfield 1911 is hands down the most accurate gun out of the box that I have. I free shot 35 rounds in a 3.5" pattern (hole it became) today with only two strays due to the shooter. So, you would be hard pressed to get my 1911 away from me. The only thing that I give up is magazine capacity. Unless I am in a war, the 7 rounds in the gun and the 14 in my spare magazines should hold me. If not it was not meant to be my day.

I own both and I can say that I enjoy both. Some like 1 more than the other, but you need to approach each with an unbiased mind to see and feel wich is your preference. Prior to even holding a Glock, I thought they were ugly and a joke. Then I shot 1. I ended up buying that one! Accuracy: Itd be a toss-up between my G17 and my 70 series Combat Commander (9mm). Both are very accurate!. My full size 1911 (.45) will not out-shoot either. For looks, the 1911 wins every time! But, it does require regular maintenance, where as the Glock just keeps going, and going, and going. To sum it up, I'll take both!

Im knew to the semi auto handgun scene. My first is the Taurus 1911pt AR and I love the feel of it. I dont know what I want next for my CCW but just about everyone I talk to tries to push the Glock on me. It feels better than I thought (not like a 2x4)...so much to choose from but Glocks are what I keep hearing over and over.

Many Glock Owners allmost go into meltdown mode if their Glock ever fails to cycle properly....mainly because it hardly ever happens. Its a shock to the senses. Thats why some of us like Glocks. mike gn

Man, thats like asking TNT or C-4, Ford or Dodge, whiskey or scotch. The answer to Op's question is: BOTH. Every gun owner should be required to own a 1911. The look, feel, shootability of a steel framed 5" beast throwing hate and discontent down range, how can you not love it. And as has been pointed out, it can blow up tanks.
![]() But, I love my Glock pistols. Reliable, affordable, ease of maintenance, the ability to swap barrells and mags to shoot different calibers gives you flexability. I carry a G-27 (40 cal subcompact) as my CCW because of no external safety.
