Scientists Call AP Report on Global Warming 'Hysteria'
Tuesday, December 16, 2008

Scientists skeptical of the assertion that climate change is the result of man's activites are criticizing a recent Associated Press report on global warming, calling it "irrational hysteria," "horrifically bad" and "incredibly biased."

They say the report, which was published on Monday, contained sweeping scientific errors and was a one-sided portrayal of a complicated issue.

"If the issues weren't so serious and the ramifications so profound, I would have to laugh at it," said David Deming, a geology professor at the University of Oklahoma who has been critical of media reporting on the climate change issue.

In the article, Obama Left with Little Time to Curb Global Warming, AP Science Writer Seth Borenstein wrote that global warming is "a ticking time bomb that President-elect Barack Obama can't avoid," and that "global warming is accelerating."

Deming, in an interview, took issue with Borenstein's characterization of a problem he says doesn't exist.

"He says global warming is accelerating. Not only is it continuing, it's accelerating, and whether it's continuing that was completely beyond the evidence," Deming told FOXNews.com.

"The mean global temperature, at least as measured by satellite, is now the same as it was in the year 1980. In the last couple of years sea level has stopped rising. Hurricane and cyclone activity in the northern hemisphere is at a 24-year low and sea ice globally is also the same as it was in 1980."

Deming said the article is further evidence of the media's decision to talk about global warming as fact, despite what he says is a lack of evidence.

"Reporters, as I understand reporters, are supposed to report facts,"Deming said. "What he's doing here is he's writing a polemic and reporting it as fact, and that's not right. It's not reporting. It's propaganda.

"This reads like a press release for an environmental advocacy group like Greenpeace. It's not fair and balanced."

A spokesman for the Associated Press said that the news agency stands by its story. "It’s a news story, based on fact and the clearly expressed views of President-elect Barack Obama and others," spokesman Paul Colford told FOXNews.com in an e-mail.

Michael R. Fox, a retired nuclear scientist and chemistry professor from the University of Idaho, is another academic who found serious flaws with the AP story's approach to the issue.

"There's very little that's right about it," Fox said. "And it's really harmful to the United States because people like this Borenstein working for AP have an enormous impact on everyone, because AP sells their news service to a thousand news outlets.

"One guy like him can be very destructive and alarming. Yeah it's freedom of speech, but its dishonest."

Like Deming, Fox said global warming is not accelerating. "These kinds of temperatures cycle up and down and have been doing so for millions of years," he said.

He said there is little evidence to believe that man-made carbon dioxide is causing temperature fluctuation. "It's silly to lay it all on man-made carbon dioxide," Fox said. "It was El Nino in 1998 that caused the big spike in global warming and little to do with carbon dioxide."

Other factors, including sun spots, solar winds, variations in the solar magnetic field and solar irradiation, could all be affecting temperature changes, he said.

James O'Brien, an emeritus professor at Florida State University who studies climate variability and the oceans, said that global climate change is very important for the country and that Americans need to make sure they have the right answers for policy decisions. But he said he worries that scientists and policymakers are rushing to make changes based on bad science.

"Global climate change is occurring in many places in the world," O'Brien said. "But everything that's attributed to global warming, almost none of it is global warming."

He took issue with the AP article's assertion that melting Arctic ice will cause global sea levels to rise.

"When the Arctic Ocean ice melts, it never raises sea level because floating ice is floating ice, because it's displacing water," O'Brien said. "When the ice melts, sea level actually goes down.

"I call it a fourth grade science experiment. Take a glass, put some ice in it. Put water in it. Mark level where water is. Let it met. After the ice melts, the sea level didn't go up in your glass of water. It's called the Archimedes Principle."

He called sea level changes a "major scare tactic used by the global warming people."

O'Brien said he doesn't discount the potential effects man is having on the environment, but he cautioned that government should not make hasty decisions.

"There is no question that the Obama administration is green and I'm green, and there's no question that they're going to really take a careful look at what we need to do and attack problems, and I applaud that," O'Brien said.

"But I'm really concerned that they're going to spend all the money on implementation of mitigation, rather than supporting the science."

It's funny how Al Gore has three corporations set up to "take care" of global warming that would end up making him fabulously wealthy if countries actually do chip in money to his cause. Gore has recently admitted that there is currently no global warming because of the unusually low sunspot activity. This has actutually lowered temps slightly over the past few years. Gore has said though that global warming will start with a vengence in a few years though & it would be prudent to follow his original plan to charge countries for their naughty gas emissions.

Where do I mail a check

Hey, I actually believe that global warming is real. Well, somebody has to. You people have kind of fixed focus precetion of the future. It is called mired in denial. Al Gore had to get something right. Yea, veritably, brothers, I've seen the proof, but I have no intention of sharing my data. It would change anything. I prefer to think of it as God's attempt to flush the human toilet. You have to agree, it has been a while, particularly here, and never in the Americas. With global warming comes climate change, massive populations shifts, famine, plague and war. Something for everybody. A lot of natural laws that have been ignored will again be up for consideration. Remember, if it weren't for the ice ages we'd probably still be living in caves and grooming each other for fleas. You don't believe we are preparing for economic collapse (not the fake one like we have now), energy starvation (in about 5 - 10 years) and the wars resulting thereoff just look at our last election. Remember, whom the gods would destroy they first make stupid. What will the new song be after about 3 yrs of drought in Amierica's heartland? The local newspaper said the other day that we need to increase food production (for the 3rd world) by 50% by 2010. Yeah, right. Food production is decreasing, not increasing. India and China will come on line fully about then too, with greenhouse emissions equaling ours. Anybody notice Barack Obama dedicating much air time to his plan for developing alternate energy resources? Of course not. Why would he? It isn't happening. Denial and rationalization are the primary human responses to any natural or manmade catastorphe. Now, I'm not a totaly cynic, but I've got money that says either the New Madrid Fault lets go or the Yellowstone Cauldron blows when things are getting really critical. It is almost enough to make me religious. Cormac McCarthy was wrong. This is a country (and a time) for old men. We understand better what is happening, have a better perspective, and appreciate it more. It is going to be a bumpy ride, but an entertaining one, probably one better to read about that live through.
My great grandfather (a half-breed and an orphan), as a child, was on the Cherokee removals. One of the things most constant in Cherokee politics at that time was (You guessed it) denial and rationalization, followed by bitter anger and hatred, focused, in this case, on the voluntary removees not so afflicted. Nobody really blamed the distant white government. instead they blamed the people who understood the real situation and made the best deal they could. It won't happen, it can't happen, and it isn't happening, but it did and they died by the thousands driven from Georgia to what is now Oklahoma like animals. I think our own attitude will be driven by denial and rationalization, then anger and hatred for those we can reach. This is not a good thing for the rest of the world, because our reach is great. We are truly living in inteesting times. Old Timer

Global warming is another myth designed to rip off the American people in the form of carbon credits. There are already suggestions of a world carbon tax that would have nations like the United States paying penalties into UN coffers.

If they want to stop global warming they should get Al Gore to keep his mouth shut for awhile....tremendous amount of hot air there.

Here's a rather definitive note received this morning from TownHall.com daily mailing. I thought it appropriate for this thread:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Climate change is no longer science. It's politics... Climate change is also about power. Power to control.... It's about who gets to decide: how much energy we will have... where that energy will come from... what it will cost... It's about simulations, scenarios and monsters conjured up by computer models that should never be used to chart government policy -- especially on matters that will profoundly affect our livelihoods, living standards, life spans and dreams of a better future.
"So hold onto your wallets, and hope you can hold onto your homes, cars and jobs. You're about to be put on a wild political roller coaster."
- Paul Driessen, TownHall.com
Make no mistake; frightening gullible Americans into swallowing the MYTH of Global Warming has NOTHING to do with saving the environment and EVERYTHING to do with raising your taxes, expanding government control over your day to day life and reviving a discredited Socialist ideology!
As Driessen points out, it has EVERYTHING to do with forcing you to pay even higher prices for gasoline at the pump, freezing in the winter to lower your electric bill and paying exorbitant prices for food at the grocery store.
That truth is becoming all too apparent!
That's why Gore constantly calls for a "carbon-tax"... Ironic isn't it... Instead of taxing you on the very air you breathe, it might be possible that one day you will be taxed on the air you exhale.
Ask yourself the following: If Global Warming was really a movement to save the environment -- and not a means to steal your freedom and tax you into oblivion -- why does Al Gore live such an energy-busting lifestyle as reported by FOX News last year?
"[L]ast August Tipper and Al Gore used twice as much electricity in their two-building property as an average U.S. household uses in an entire year, the Tennessee Center for Policy Research, a think tank, reported Tuesday."
But the MYTH of Global Warming is no longer just a fantasy being advocated by Al Gore and radical eco-leftists.
It's a horrifying reality being advanced even by conservative leaders who should know better!
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger actually signed a law that calls for a 25 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.
Senator John McCain is swallowing the global warming Kool-Aid too and recently said of some of Gore's loony proposals: "If the vice president says it's doable, I believe it's doable."
That spells TROUBLE and makes the MYTH of Global Warming one of the greatest threats to your way of life TODAY!
And the only way to FIGHT this threat is to ARM yourself with the facts, so that you may ARM OTHERS!
Hey oldtimer,
You're correct. The Earth has been warming steadily since the last Ice Age! Other than that though, Global Warming is what the others have said it is, PEOPLE CONTROL and nothing else.
Listen to Charlton Heston on mankind destroying the world:
http://http://nukegingrich.wordpress...limate-change/
Text below;
You think man can destroy the planet? What intoxicating vanity. Let me tell you about our planet. Earth is four-and-a-half-billion-years-old. There’s been life on it for nearly that long, 3.8 billion years. Bacteria first; later the first multicellular life, then the first complex creatures in the sea, on the land. Then finally the great sweeping ages of animals, the amphibians, the dinosaurs, at last the mammals, each one enduring millions on millions of years, great dynasties of creatures rising, flourishing, dying away — all this against a background of continuous and violent upheaval. Mountain ranges thrust up, eroded away, cometary impacts, volcano eruptions, oceans rising and falling, whole continents moving, an endless, constant, violent change, colliding, buckling to make mountains over millions of years. Earth has survived everything in its time. It will certainly survive us. If all the nuclear weapons in the world went off at once and all the plants, all the animals died and the earth was sizzling hot for a hundred thousand years, life would survive, somewhere: under the soil, frozen in Arctic ice. Sooner or later, when the planet was no longer inhospitable, life would spread again. The evolutionary process would begin again. It might take a few billion years for life to regain its present variety. Of course, it would be very different from what it is now, but the earth would survive our folly, only we would not. If the ozone layer gets thinner, ultraviolet radiation sears the earth, so what? Ultraviolet radiation is good for life. It’s powerful energy. It promotes mutation, change. Many forms of life will thrive with more UV radiation. Many others will die out. Do you think this is the first time that’s happened? Think about oxygen. Necessary for life now, but oxygen is actually a metabolic poison, a corrosive gas, like fluorine. When oxygen was first produced as a waste product by certain plant cells some three billion years ago, it created a crisis for all other life on earth. Those plants were polluting the environment, exhaling a lethal gas. Earth eventually had an atmosphere incompatible with life. Nevertheless, life on earth took care of itself. In the thinking of the human being a hundred years is a long time. A hundred years ago we didn’t have cars, airplanes, computers or vaccines. It was a whole different world, but to the earth, a hundred years is nothing. A million years is nothing. This planet lives and breathes on a much vaster scale. We can’t imagine its slow and powerful rhythms, and we haven’t got the humility to try. We’ve been residents here for the blink of an eye. If we’re gone tomorrow, the earth will not miss us.
Now, I don't agree with the (to date unproven) Theory of Evolution, but he is right that man will not destroy the earth. God will when Jesus returns at the battle of Armageddon. There, that should do it!
I had to chuckle today when I opened USA Today to page 3a today.
I'm not laughing at peoples misfortunes, just at the media and the irony of the stories.
Lead story under their Nationline column's headline was this "Chilling global warming report due".
It's a 1 paragraph story about a NASA report about land ice melt.
Right next to it is the story about "Major highways were closed Wednesday in Southern California as rain and snows blanketed the region".
It must be true, the worlds biggest corporations tell us it is.....then we all rush out to buy more ECO-FRIENDLY, cars, washing machines, light bulbs and feel guilty about our carbon footprint, so we pay tax on flying, heating, keeping cool etc. All to save the planet.
Why is it, they always say things like "it's the hottest August in 98 years". So, what their saying is, 98 years ago, when there was no 747's flying around the world, most of the world did not have high energy products, traffic congestion.....??? the world's climate was just like it is today. global warming = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Must go now, time to feed the Camel.........just in case their right....is it me or is it warm today ?
What happened to the Ice Age? Had to be Global Warming to melt all that mess. What happened to all the tropical swamps in the rocky mtns?? Had to be Global Cooling. In none of the early digs have they found one large American SUV gas guzzler. Wait, Yellow Stone Natl Park emits 45,000 tons of CO2 per day. This could be the real cause. Mr. Obama should have the hot springs back filled right away. Well after all you can't send YNP over seas like they have every other American Icon.
Bingo. This man gets a cigar. Yes, the earth is warming, and then it will cool again when the next Ice Age sets in.
The notion that humans can control geologic processes is the ultimate sci-fi con game.
I can't add much to this thread, you guys have just about covered it all! But, I wonder if Mr. Gore thinks we are also responsible for the warming of the other planets in our Solor System?
