Right now I'm in the market for a survival knife, and I've narrowed it down to one of two choices, which one would you guys recommend
Crkt ultima ![]() Or the ka bar Becker companion http://www.kabar.com/knives/detail/1

Don't buy a survival knife with a serated edge. How are you going to keep it sharp? A smooth edge can be sharpened with just about any kind of rock. That point alone makes a great argument for why smooth edged knives are better fit for survival knives, IMHO. This is the one I chose, a Gerber Big Rock, usually around $30.

I've owned a few CRKTs and ONE Becker - imho - the Becker (pre KaBar) was one solid chunk of steel and held an edge and was easy to sharpen. My nephew carried that Becker to Iraq as his belt knife. It doesn't look so good anymore - but it still cuts and is still one nice chunk of steel. I like the CRKT folders.

Don't forget Glock - I have beat the crap out of this knife and am impressed. (Photos taken when it was new.) It's about the size of a bayonet and that serrated edge is fantastic for cutting wood.
I have Gerbers, Bucks, and an assorted of folding knives, but this Glock has found a home on my Batbelt, a few inches behind my 1911. ![]() $30 at Midway. http://www.midwayusa.com/find?userSe...ry=glock+knife

Look at a Bravo 1 by Bark River knives. The Marines Force Recon unit uses them.

Id go with the Becker.
But either would serve you very well.
