Default Re: Striker vs Firing Pin

A firing pin is a lightweight part, which serves to transfer energy from a spring loaded hammer to the primer, while a striker is usually heavier, and is directly connected to the spring providing the energy to impact the primer. Strikers mechanisms are generally simpler, since they combine the functions of hammer and firing pin in one. Some firing pins are attached to the hammer, as in revolvers, because there is not sufficient space for a striker to be utilized.

Hammer firing system utilize a spring loaded hammer to strike a light firing pin which in turn strikes the cartridge case.

Striker firing systems hold a heavier firing pin back against its spring. The trigger releases the spring loaded firing pin to hit the cartridge case to fire it.

Striker firing systems are most often used in bolt action rifles. Hammer firing system are most often used in hand guns but some of the less expensive handguns use striker firing system.

In handguns it is much easier to make a superb trigger out of a hammer system than a striker system. Most modern tactical plastic guns use some form of striker firing system. Few of these guns have classical target triggers whereas most any hammer firing system in handguns can be made into (if it is not already) surperb target trigger systems.

Because the hammer is not visible does not mean the gun is not a hammer firing system. Some guns have internal hammers, like most over/under shotguns, ike the M1 Garand, and like the High Standard, Browning Buckmark, the S&W Modle 41 and the Ruger MK series 22LR target guns.
