Renting Gun Tools - what a concept - The Firearms Forum

Bumped into a clever web site. They rent gun tools. You order what you need, and they send you the tool(s) along with a prepaid shipping label. When you are done, you put the tool back in the box, slap on the label, and give it to the mail man. Sounds pretty simple.

I just ordered a couple headspace gauges for 7.62x54R (a no-go and a field). I can use them for four days before I have to return them. The total cost for both of them, including shipping both ways, was $10.99. That sure beats buying two gauges that I will use for a couple of minutes and may never use again.

This is the first time I've ever done business with this company. I'll post "the rest of the story" after the whole thing is complete.

The outfit is called gun tool rentals. Anybody else use them before? It looked legitimate to me.

Sounds good for some, not me.

If I need a tool, no matter what kind, I buy it. Then I have it because if I need it once I'll most likely need it again.

I do rent track hoes and a jack hammer once in a while though.

I bought some headspace gauges about 5 years ago and if I remember right I paid about $20 on ebay. And this reminds me, a friend borrowed them about 4 years ago!

I tend to rent tools that require maintenance (skid steer, man lift, etc.). If it's something I can throw in a box and forget it and it will still be fine when I need it again in two years, I buy it. So headspace gauges would always be purchased.

Of course, I also buy tools I need in pawn shops, use them for what I need, and resell them on Craigslist. I've never come out behind doing that, and more than once I've doubled my money.

This idea actually makes pretty good sense and I wish i had thought of it.

Own only one SIG and both the windage and elevation are off at 25 yards?

Buy the parts (very cheap) rent the sightpusher take it to the range and go to town.

I OWN a SIG sightpusher and a Glock sightpusher.
They are expensive tools that sit in cigar boxes for years between uses.

The job is done. I ordered the gauges on Sunday. They arrived on Wednesday. I checked out three rifles in a couple of minutes (The nasty looking Type 53 with the mismatched bolt would not close on the "no-go". The same was true for the roughly finished 91/30, made in 1942. But the nicely finished 91/30 with all matching numbers made in peaceful 1933. . . . . . Well, the bolt would tightly close on the "no-go" gauge, but not on the"field" gauge. The nicest looking rifle had the largest head space. Go figure.)

I put the gauges back in the bubble mailer and taped it back together. Then I taped on the pre-printed, pre-paid, return shipping label. It will go out in the mailbox tomorrow.

All for $10.99 and I never had to leave my house.

This rental service gets a big "thumbs up" from me.

If I need them again, I will rent them again. At $10.99 a pop, I can go back two more times and still come out ahead compared to buying them.
