In my opinion the Mosquito is a better gun. I have one and have shot my brothers P22 quite a bit. I llike the feel of the Sig better and the fact that it is a Sig. I will say the Mosquito is probably a little pickier about the ammo you feed it. I found that Fedral automatch works the best with very, very few issues. I'm also sure that any CCI stinger or other quality CCI ammo will work fine as well. The Sig does come with another spring of different strength to try with ammo until you find a good match. Good luck with your new gun purchase.

I have a mosquito that does very well with CCI mini-mags and Federal American Eagle copper coated bullets. I've shot Rem Golden bullets, but had a few get hung up loading.
It is accurate, easy to clean, and I like the size better then the P22.

I have both along with the SW 22a. They all shoot the wally world federal bulk ammo and have specific uses. The p22 is just for fun and a great plinker, the sig has a nice feel and is fairly accurate while the sw22 has a red dot scope on it as it was a touch more accurate than my sig. All fun pistols just depends on what you are wanting out of them.

If you want to add to your wishlist then you should also be looking at the ruger lines of 22 semi auto pistols. My favorite target pistol is my browning buckmark with 7 1/4 barrel and hi viz sights. The squirrels this year really took a pounding from the buckmark.
For me the ammo cost is nowhere near as much as the cost of the pistols. I really like the walther ppk style pistols in any caliber and have a fair number of them from various manufacturers in 22. These are by no means target pistols but still extremely fun to shoot. What a hobby ![]() |

I have a Sig Mosquito, and it's not going anywhere. It's bigger and heavier than the Walther, but it's also more reliable, more accurate, and easier to clean. It's a great plinker, and with the lighter recoil spring it will eat just about any ammo. The heavier spring requires hyper-velocity bullets, and even then it doesn't like the lighter (~32 grains) ones.
When I bought mine, the Mosquito was set at retail $100 more than the P22. This has changed so they both cost about the same now, but that initial price difference is indicative of the quality difference. One thing to remember: The Sig is made by Sig; the Walther is made by Smith & Wesson, and they don't have the best reputation with semiautos. If these are the only two you're looking at, then you need to buy the Sig and never look back.

FYI, you can get Mosquito magazines at any Academy now. They are factory Sig mags, not aftermarket, and usually are priced at $29.99

I looked at a two-tone mosquito a few months back. It was priced nicely, but I wanted to do some research first. Everything I read said that it was finicky about ammo and the springs needed to be changed. I thought the better of it and got something else for the same price. I just can't seem to get my mind wrapped around these new plastic guns, like you younger guys. At my age, who needs the aggravation? Give me blue steel and wood grips every time. TJ

This is an interesting little plinker, modern looking and well built.
It's a DA/SA pistol and the DA trigger pull is long and heavy. It's not that bad in SA. The trigger guard is way too small as well. After shooting it for the first time I found it to be fairly accurate, not as good as my Rugers, but pretty good nevertheless. It came with two slide springs, one for use with high velocity ammo and one for regular 22LR or sub sonics. So far I have only ran high velocity ammo and all has work fine. I bought the Tactical Trainer model, for the price, I think its a good value. ![]() ![]() |

Ah, I almost forgot to mention this!
Lots of people talk about how finicky the Mosquito is with ammo. I have found this complaint to be very misleading. Instead, I've discovered that the Mosquito is very susceptible to limp wristing. If the user does not keep a solid, stiff grip, the gun will fail to eject or fail to feed pretty consistently. The same grip that will make any 9mm feed reliably can be way too loose for the Mosquito. I discovered this by taking one of my little brothers to the range with me. It was shooting perfectly for me, but it kept having problems for him. We were using the same box of ammo, and we were both using the same magazines. After I suggested that he really hold his wrist stiff, his problems went away immediately. Don't let anyone tell you these are picky about ammo until you try shooting it for yourself. They aren't picky about ammo; they're picky about technique.

I have a new Mosquito, too, and had all the classic problems. I now lubricate the cartridges with a quick shot of WD-40 before or after loading them in the clip (wipe off excess). No more problems with any of many brands of ammo I have tried. Problem appears to be too much friction between cartridge and chamber so there is not enough blowback energy to cycle the action correctly. This might work for you, too.

I think if you find the ammo that it likes to eat, you'll have no more issues from the gun. CampingJosh and others had some good advice. Sigs are well made and once you find your comfort zone with yours, I'm pretty sure you'll be shooting it for years to come.

Sig tech support states that they want you to use CCI mini mags.

The early Mosquito's had lots of problems and earned a bad reputation and there are lots of writeups about them in the Sig Forum. The newer ones seem to be better guns but based on the early reports I didn't and probably won't buy one. I bought a P226 22LR conversion kit instead and it runs great. I did by a custom mag follower that locks the slide back after the last round. I also bought the same guy's mag spring and plug that converts the magazine to hold 15 rounds instead of the 10 the factory magazine holds. These magazine mods made the magazines expensive but they are totally functional and provided a 50% increase in capacity.

I have both and have to say that I enjoy shooting both very much. If I had to get only one I would pick the sig. Mine eats it all and I don't put CCI through it. It is easy to clean and has a more realistic size. The P22 is just to small. I do not enjoy the recoil spring tool thats needed for the P22. I have yet needed a field cleaning so that I could continue to shoot, but If I did the P22 would be a pain. The only plinker that is more of a pain to clean is my Ruger Mark III 22/45......But really, there 22's and just meant to be shot often.
