Newbie Question - The Firearms Forum

I'm new here and relatively ignorant, so please excuse this question. I know the difference between "short" and "long" ammunition for a .22, but what is the difference between "long" and "long rifle?"

Any info appreciated.

22 short was loaded with a 29 grain bullet. 22 long was longer, so more powder (more powerful), but still a 29 grain bullet. 22 long rifle is the same length as the long, but has even more powder, so more powerful, plus it has (usually) a 40 grain bullet.

Shorts are still loaded, and are readily available, but expensive.

Longs have, for all practical purposes, ceased to exist. CCI makes some, but they are not real "longs", as they are underpowered "CB" rounds, and just loaded in the "long" case so they will chamber easier in more guns.

If your gun will shoot them, long rifles are the ones to use. More options in the manufacturer and in the type. And much cheaper.
