Ensign's Amendment Passes For D.C. - The Firearms Forum

Fairfax, Va. - The United States Senate has voted, with overwhelming bipartisan support, to adopt an amendment offered by Senator John Ensign (R-NV) that seeks to protect the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens in the District of Columbia. The amendment, attached to S.160, the D.C. Voting Rights Act, will repeal restrictive gun control laws passed by the District of Columbia's (D.C.) city council after the landmark D.C. v. Heller Supreme Court decision. The vote margin was 62-36.

"Today's vote brings us one step closer to restoring the Second Amendment freedom of law-abiding D.C. residents," said NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox. "It's ludicrous that good people in our nation's capital continue to be harassed as they try to defend themselves and their loved ones in their own homes. This vote reinforces the historic Heller ruling."

After the Heller ruling, the D.C. city council passed a law requiring would-be gun owners to pay a registration fee, pass a 20-question multiple choice test, take a five-hour training course, undergo an invasive background check every six years, re-register any firearm every three years, and finally, submit all handguns for ballistics testing. Current D.C. law also bans an overwhelming majority of firearms commonly used for self-defense. This Ensign Amendment would also remedy that unjust practice.

"NRA would like to thank the lead sponsor, Sen. John Ensign for his efforts to reform D.C.'s gun laws and enable folks to protect their property and their loved ones," concluded Cox. "It's time for leaders in Washington to wake up to the fact that the Supreme Court decision is now the law of the land."

I'm thrilled to see this but I'm curious as to how the Dems. let this in the Bill.
I'm just looking gift horses in their mouths.

I caught a part of a floor speech by Sen. John Thune having something to do with concealed carry. I believe this was part of the same bill. This was on CSPAN yesterday.
Anybody know what that was about?

Edit: google was my friend.

Here is a video of Sen. Thune's floor speech but I can't find if the amendment made it into the bill. I guessing that it didn't.

My Senator, David Vitter was a co-author of the bill.

Do my eyes deceive me? We actually won this one? How did this get through a Dem controlled senate? I am literally (but pleasantly) stunned!!!

In 1994, Bill Clinton blamed Senate and House support for the 1994 'Crime Bill' as the reason 20+ Senate and House Democrat seats were lost. This was the 'Republican Revolution' of 1994 and led the way for the 'Freshman Republicans'. 2010 is coming. The liberal idiots don't want to be slapped down again...

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that MAYBE some of the more conservative dem's are even getting a little tired of the radical left turn the government is taking and maybe made a deal with the Democrat leadership. ??? I wonder if the Rebublicans have been enticing some of the blue-dogs to jump ship ? That'd be really cool.

Don't forget what it is attached to: voting representation for the District, i.e., a solid Democrap vote, to be followed by the attempt to get two Senators for the District, another solid two Democrap votes. That is a pretty high price to pay.

Yep, the antis figure they'll let this one slip for now, betting on having more Dem votes in Congress later for legislation to ban/register/confiscate.
