Default Radio commentator Paul Harvey dead at 90

CHICAGO - Paul Harvey, the news commentator and talk-radio pioneer whose staccato style made him one of the nation's most familiar voices, died Saturday in Arizona, according to ABC Radio Networks. He was 90.

Harvey died surrounded by family at a hospital in Phoenix, where he had a winter home, said Louis Adams, a spokesman for ABC Radio Networks, where Harvey worked for more than 50 years. No cause of death was immediately available.

Harvey had been forced off the air for several months in 2001 because of a virus that weakened a vocal cord. But he returned to work in Chicago and was still active as he passed his 90th birthday. His death comes less than a year after that of his wife and longtime producer, Lynne.

Sad to hear, he was a native Okie, most folks didn't know that. I remember listening to him for most of my life.

Amen. A veritable piece of americana is gone to join his, "Angel." I can remember listening to Paul Harvey while sleeping in the tent in the back yard and on my new Zenith "transistor" radio that I got for my birthday in 1964.

"Paul Harvey ... Good day!"

I first heard him in 1955. I would go down to the newspaper to eat lunch with Dad. He was a gun supporter, despite his other leanings. I shall miss him.

Sad indeed...I guess I just always looked forward to listening at lunch time when I was in auto.....very enjoyable reporting.......I simply do not remember him ever seeming to lean very far left or right of the edge of the American Flag...but by god I knew how he felt about the flag and all within it....

Of course an icon of radio persona....I guess the only thing I ever kidded about him was something he couldnt help..."The Bose Radio" for a sponsor....and laughed at that only cause the people involved though technically evolved...kinder a problem with me...but thats another
post....

best to him....

Sad news. I always liked listening to him. I did notice here of late he wasn't sounding like the Paul Harvey of a few years ago. Sounded kinda weak in the voice. I guess his son will keep up the "rest of the stories"

I always enjoyed him -
I will miss him -
Sabashimon made the 'rest of the story' comment, and it is so very true. Today, regardless of political leanings left or right, Paul Harvey knows the full truth.
And I agree with artabr; we are indeed diminished.
Take care of Paul Harvey, Lord -

Wow...

No, I haven't agreed with everything the man said down through the years, but I will miss him terribly.

Good Day...

When I would hear Paul Harvey. I would think of my grandfather.
We used to set in his porch swing and listen.
I can still smell grandpas pipe tobacco.
Paul will be sadly missed by me.

I shall miss the LAST of the GREAT COMMENTATORS in his generation, too.

I have always put him in the same class as H V Kaltenborn, Gabrial Heatter, the Elder Lowell Thomas, Fulton Lewis and, yes, even Edwin R Murrow etc.....

I didn't always agree with some of the things he said, but he said them with class. Radio won't be the same without him.
