S&W Model 41 Silenced Finally !!!! - The Firearms Forum

I finally found a Gunsmith that would take on my Model 41 and he did a excellent job, I have a Old School Soundtech Suppressor made several years ago which I used on a Modified 10/22 with 5/8-24 Reverse thread and couldn`t find anyone to thread my M-41, finally it`s complete what a shooter....

I couldn`t ask for more

Now I am interested in this modification.

I am no expert, but have some small experience to draw on. To suppress the sound one needs to have a sub sonic bullet. The two suppressed weapons I have used (De Lisle and Ruger II) both had holes in the barrel to bleed off velocity, avoiding the supersonic crack. On the 41 above, the .22 bullet must still be supersonic?

I am sure I am missing something, but what?

Weapons with holes in the barrel from what I`ve heard are only Ported barrel unless they have a Integral supressor installed in the barrel itself, these weapons look like your run of the mill OEM guns without anything done to them. I have yet to shoot a Ported barreled weapon with Subsonic ammo without a loud report.

I us Wolf Match Target, Any Standard Velocity or Remington Subsonic ammo in this unit... without sonic crack. useing the higher velocity ammo like CCI Stingers and a few other will only cause a crack down range coming out of the gun itself it`s quiet.

Thanks for that. Both the guns I have used had integral suppressors surrounding the ported barrels.

As far as loud report goes, I can only say they sounded to me, as the firer, as an air rifle would, not 'silent' but substantially less noise than a regular shot.

I recall seeing a suppressed Uzi on range in full auto, though did not fire it. Again the barrel was ported inside the suppressor and the sound, or lack of it was very impressive.

The only experiance I have had with a "can" was on a Ruger MK1, years ago. The part that impressed me was the "click clack" sound of the bolt cycling, as I had never been able to hear this before!! How is the silencer screwed on the 41 barrel? Was it counterbored at the muzzle with internal threads cut? If so then the "can" has a threaded shank that is screwed into the counter bore in the barrel? Just curious....Kirk

They sell Nylon dampeners now that you can place in the actions of the Ruger Mark`s & the 41`s to take that Click/Clack noise away almost completely

the Soundtech can on the 41 in the photo is 5/8-24 male reverse threaded and the muzzle of the 41 barrel was machined & tapped for it, it`s kinda different instead of the Can being tapped and threaded,... this couldn`t be done with the slab side 41 so it had to be machine. I also had a 10/22 Butler Creek Bull Barrel Machined to except this Soundtech can... it doesn`t back off as I thought it would you have to remove it... on the other hand my Walther p22 thread adapter backs off after a 100 rounds or so it has to be snugged up or it becomes very lose. I use a Omega Can on it about the size of a roll of Dimes... VERY NICE lil` package.

Really fine looking piece you have there! I just acquired an AWS Systems Technology Badlander. Be curious to know how the two compare from both an accuracy and a " noise " perspective. I also have a Model 41, just not adaptable to a suppressor. You're a lucky fella.

Hey.....I have a question regarding these. I was under the impression they were illegal. Are silencers OK to use and own now? Or have I just been grossly misinformed over the years?

Also, do these devices add to or take away from accuracy?

John, silencers fall under the National Firearms Act, just like machineguns and sawed off shotguns.

They are legal to own, in most of the country, as long as they are registered with the Feds. To register it, you fill out a form and send it, along with finger prints and pictures and a 200 dollar tax, to ATF, and after some time (ranging from weeks to months) they will send you back the registration paper with the tax stamp affixed to it. You never have to pay another fee. If you die, your heir does not have to pay a fee, but still has to have the silencer re-registered in his name. If you sell it, the buyer has to pay another 200 dollar tax to the Feds. So used silencers are pretty much not out there (I mean, heck, you are gonna want to get most of your money out of it, right? You pay 500 for the can, and another 200 tax, you got 7 in it. You're gonna want to get at least 5 out of it, and for that I can get a new one. Why buy used?).

Several states will not allow you to own one. Before you get jumpy about getting one, you need to check and see whether your state will let you.
