Default 338 lapua?

Hubby and I would love to get a 50cal, but they are just too expensive, so we are looking at a Armalite Ar30 in 338 lapua instead. We just want a BIG gun for really long range, just to say we have made the shot, and it would be so cool to own one, and who knows when we may need one right? Anyway, any thoughts on the 338 lapua? Or suggestions for another gun/caliber that would "get the job done"?

The 338 Lapua is an excellent cartridge that was born in Finland by Cartridge Factory LAPUA Ltd. at the request of the US Government as a long range sniper round. The original design was based on the 416 Rigby case but because of high pressures that case was abandoned and a whole new designed case was created. It will drive a 250 grain bullet well over 2900 fps. For reference a 50 BMG will drive a 750 grain bullet about 2850 out of a 29 inch barreled gun. In my opinion from a lot of experience the 50 BMG is a lot of work to reload for, uses a special extra large primer, burns twice the powder and the gun is not very handy because of its weight albeit fun to shoot.

As a suggestion the 300 Remington Ultra Mag would be a very good choice as well and you can get it from several different manufacturers. It will drive a 200 grain bullet well in excess of 3200 fps and there are far more various 30 caliber bullets to choose from as well as factory ammo is much easier to obtain than the 338 Lapua or 50 BMG.

I have a friend (another guy who hangs out in the same gunshop I frequent) who loads and shoots the .338 Lapua. We've only talked about it once, but his eyes just lit up at the mention of it. He's very happy with it.

He told me that he's able to shoot it for about half the cost of shooting a .50 BMG. Of course, both of these are out of most people's price ranges unless you load your own.

I thought about that Armalite AR30 as well. Factory ammo can run as much as $7 a round but i think you can reload for it for between $2 to $3 a round... about the same as 50bmg.

Also the AR30 runs about $4k+ in price while the Armalite AR50 can be bought for $3400. The one thing that the AR30 has on the AR50 is that the proper scope for the AR50 costs $1200 "base price" if you want the Bors electronics that adjust the scope point of aim then that will cost you another $1k. I think a scope for the AR30 might be cheaper...but i could be wrong?

Go to youtube and type in each rifle and watch the long range shots they make with each....

Here are a couple for the AR50.

One for .338 Lapua...not AR30 though... Weatherby Mark 5 which is what i would like to have...
Watch the whole thing... Second shot is 820yard and the deer dropped without running!

Thanks for the info. Either the ar50 or the ar30 is really out of our price range for the gun and the ammo, but we were gonna save for it, and maybe shoot it a couple of times a year. The lady at the local pawn shop, who loves to see me come in, has just about talked me into a Browning 7mag. I may just get it and be happy for awhile. But with the threat of a gun ban, I was really hoping I could get the money together to get one now.
