I need help. I have my Great-great grandfather's shotgun and I can't find any information about it. It is a double barreled side by each. The barrels are 31 3/4 inches long and appear to have makers marks. There are two diamond with a letter or number or letter inside(too worn) and a pair of crossed swords at the base of each barrel. The letters J L are stamped in the underside along with various numbers. The underside is also hand stamped or engraved ENGLAND and along the top LAMINATED STEEL.
The metalwork on the stock appears to be hand engraved, in fact all the metal on the gun appears to be hand engraved including the trigger guard. The metal on the stock also has the name CHARLES HOLLOWAY hand engraved. I thought that this would be my best clue but no dice. There was a family of English gunsmiths named Holloway but no Charles. The butt appears to be a very hard dark wood..perhaps ebony. On the underside of the stock is a depression that once held what appears to have been a badge about an inch by a half inch. The family story is that it was the emblem of the Union army as my GGGF was a Civil WaR veteran. I tend to doubt that this was used in the Civil War. My GGGF was from Ohio and lived 1842-1934. Any help or leads will be much appreciated. Sorry that I do not know all the proper names for all the parts.
