Don't know about the Rem, I've never shot that maodel, but my son used to hunt them with my 10/22 and the iron sights and did pretty well. Then I put a scope on it and he'd get his 5 every time he went out. It was quite awhile after I bought it that I got to play with it because he always grabbed it first.

Now I have fun with it cuz he's moved 1200 miles away. Hehehehe.

Howdy In the past I have used several verations of the 1022 and they are good rifles. But I have owned Remington rifles for forty years and never been sorry. From bolt action to pump and semi auto there all great. That said I did have minor problem with my 597 but corrected it quick and have had no problems since. thats my 2cents worth, good luck !

I would suggest the Ruger 10/22 target model with the heavy barrel and laminate stock. I have one of them with a 4-12 x 50mm scope mounted on it. At 50 yards 5 shots will touch each other.

For squirrels? Thats a no brainer! Rem 5 everytime. Don't get me wrong, I love my modified 10/22, she's a tackdriver. But so is my CZ 99 Precision (same gun as Rem 5) but being a beautiful bolt gun, it is the perfect squirrel sniper's rifle!

The Remington bolt would be capable of the .22 shot shells good for Squirrels I don't thing a Ruger 10/22 would be capable of the shot shells

Iv'e never heard of anybody using .22 shot shells to hunt squirrels! It would seem like you would have to get pretty close to hit them. My CZ could do
head shots at 50 to 60 yards with no problem!, ,
This was shot at 50 yards using SK std+, rifle CZ452 special the bulls measure 7/8ths of an inch after copying!
Do have a few fliers in the batch! DA

I'm not really sure it matters who made it so long as it's and american manufacturer, we seem to have a propensity for making well designed and manufactured weapons.

I shoot both and I guess it kinda depends how you hunt squirrels. If you do a lot of walking, might want to keep things as light as possible. With the Ruger 10/22, the heavy barrels are a lot more accurate, but I wouldn't want to lug one of mine around all day.

Compared to a plain jane 10/22 Ruger carbine, the Rem. Mod #5 with a 22" bbl will be just a tad heavier too. If you need a follow-up shot, the Ruger is a lot quicker than the bolt gun.

If you hunt by setting in one spot and snipe e'm out to 60 or 70 yards, the weight won't really matter, but that fast 2nd shot is great if you need it! Many times I'll shoot the first one only to have a second one pop-up to see whats going on!

This is just my opinion, for my type of squrrel hunting, so take it for what its worth. I could grab anything in the pictures. I always go with the 10/22 Deluxe carbine, it has a 3x9 40mm scope, (3rd one down). It's plenty for what I do and has killed them by the bushel basket. Light and accurate.

Good luck which ever way you go, you can't go wrong with either choice! Ken

I bought some shot shells for squirrels but they would not chamber in my Marlin 60 I thought they would be better for Squirrel since a .22 round can travel a long way after passing through a Squirrel safer with the small shot 173 pellets not as likely to travel too far

I bought some once for playing around with. At more than about 10 yards from a 8" paper plate, they would be ineffective. The little pellets just spread out way too fast.

My point exactly! It didn't seem like it would work, I remember using them as a kid on snakes, but I was only shooting from maybe 5 or 6 feet away! Doug
