Looking for a knife - The Firearms Forum

Hey guys. I want a new knife to carry in the woods with me, and I'm having trouble finding what I want. Plus, I love suggestions from you guys.

$50 to $80 range, good quality (value for the price range), 5"-7" drop point blade, and a sheath that attaches horizontally to the belt. I'd like it to be light weight (less than 10 ounces), but this is the first area on which I would compromise.

Any suggestions?

For that price range you can find a well-made knife that would serve you well, but I fear the horizontal sheath might be a tough find. I know custom makers that do that, like Bob Dozier down Ark. way. His horizontal kydex sheaths are really cool and hold the knife securely. I think for this price the best I could recommend would be a Browning model 751. Has a deep-bellied 4 1/2 in drop point blade and pinned, black micarta handles. A smaller 2 1/2 in clip point folder snaps into the handle. Really nice combo for heavy field-dressing chores and even caping(with the folder) Both knives have great edges. They can be hard to find, and when they came out were about 150-200 bucks. I have four! Found a guy on e-bay and bought six at 50.00 ea. Gave one away at dear camp last year for the big buck contest.

I have noticed they seem to go for 40.00 on up now.

Hey Campingjosh you should check out cutco.com.I bought a knife from this company in 2004 and its the best I have ever used. I have used kershaw, schrade, Buck, OLdtimer, etc etc and my cutco hunting knife out works them all. They have straight blade or there serrated edge called double d edge which I use. In four years we have field dressed eight deer and one antelope. The great thing it still looks like brand new and you could still shave your arm with it. Cutcos forever guarante is unbeatable. Look for self, and no I dont work for them. But I do know a good knife when I see it.

Say what you will, Josh, but for field purposes, it is still hard to beat the traditional Buck folding hunter for dependability and service.

It's not truly a drop point, more of a clip point, but it will certainly get the job done. Just a thought.

Dittos on the K Bar. May not be the best out there but $60.00 for a knife that's served Marines well for 60+ years ain't bad. Of course you can spend hundreds for a Randall, SOG, or dozens of other fine brands but for me I don't see that much return on the investment over what you get with a K Bar.

Dont talk to me about knives, I just bought a 'UK Legal' pocket knife. Sub 3" blade and non locking. You know, the sort that flips back cutting your fingers. It makes so much sense and no doubt reduces knife crime by at least 50%! You see people who carry knives will be easy for the police to spot, what with all the plasters.

CampingJosh, check out this one. I own one, and love it. The blade is thick enough to hammer on with a piece of wood, and will stand up to a lot of punishment. Perfect for hunting, and most camping chores. http://www.rockynational.com/2452_22...Fine_Edge.html

Hey Tranter, that looks like a full-tang heavy duty little knife. How thick is it? I might just need/want one of those. Got a name I can look for?
I does love my cutlery.
It even has a little crossguard in case my hands get slippery.

It's a 7" blade, one quarter inch thick along the spine and goes all the way, front to back. Weighs 550 grams, which is about a pound. British military issue, costs about £45.00 here, which at 1.6 makes about $70.00.

They are incredibly strong, almost unbreakable and can peel an apple, or hack through a door.

I am happy to get one for you and send, just PM me to make arrangements if you want. Oh, and you can get them with either fibre scales like mine or sometimes wood.
