I went to the range today first time in 3 weeks due to work and rain. I was shooting my MKIII and somehow there was a round in the chamber and the bolt forced another round into the rimfire and it went off. I didn't get hurt just felt a little heat on my hand and alot of smoke. Anyone ever have this happen to them? The pics are of the bullet that pushed and the round that split and went off with bolt open. the guns are my MKIII with the red dot and MKII open sights. The targets are 50 yards the center target is open sights and the two three inch are with the red dot. Using a box from an empty brick as a rest.

I am glad you were not hurt. Anything larger then .22 you may not have been so lucky. Good to see the MKIII was not damaged, I would still recommend having a gunsmith look at it for the just in case.

I think it was the ammo dirty. I was advised by Ruger not to use Remngton golden bullet and I had about 75 left so I did it anyway. This happened on the twelth round. After checking everything I switched ammo and fired another 550 cci blazers with not a problem.

I won't use Remmington .22s in anything, way too many problems.

This is where I'm getting to be, too. I like their centerfire ammo (what little I've used), and I'm a big fan of many of their firearms, but the rimfire stuff just doesn't seem to be any good anymore.

I have no gripes on the centerfire ammo either but the rimfire stuff is ridiculously poor quality. This is the first time I have seen this problem. Glad no one got hurt.

Junk, glad you didn't get hurt and it sounds like the pistol came through it in good shape, too. Oh man, I think the three bricks of .22 I bought last week were Remington!

My remington golds have caused a lot of malfunctions. I'm trying to eek my way through the rest of the brick. What else can I do, you know?

I actually gave them to a neighbor. I had two more bricks here that I was saving for him. He has a WASR in 22lr and it will eat anything, He can deal with the problems. I told and showed him what happened to me last night and he still took them. I think sometime people will shrug safety for a dollar. Not me. JUNK

Haha! Last time I was at the range, I found seven .22 shells in the parking lot--six of them fired and I was laughing away! I bet somebody thought they were awful!

Did anyone see the Mythbusters this week where they beat on centerfire cases (empty, of course, except for the primer) to see if it was possible to set off the primer with a hit from a gun butt. The cartridge case heads were so beat up that it was hard to tell that the piece of brass was originally a cartridge case AND the primers did not go off. I winced seeing the guns so horrible mistreated!
Of course, that obviously would not be the case on a rimfire round as noted above when a soft lead bullet was force against the rim of a live round in the chamber and the chambered round went off. LDBennett |

How did this happen? Did the gun double feed? Or was there a dud and you hand racked the slide and it went off?

That is a out of battery firing. And it is very common with that ammo. As stated change ammo; but remember this pistol should not fire out of battery.
This is easy to check for a defective or unclean trigger group. EMPTY GUN AND MAGAZINE, cock gun without magazine and then insert it. We all love this worthless safety feature, no magazine, no fire. Pull the bolt back just a little and pull the trigger, continue bacl and forth and see where and when it will and will not fire. A small amount of gap is somewhat acceptable, beyond that is not. Glad you wern`t hurt....most times the ears ring. |

The gun simply fired the chambered round (out of battery) and cycled as it should and the bolt went back and picked up the next round jamming it.
Generally some trash has fallen down in the trigger group and a good cleaning will remove it; but again it should not fire out of battery. Sometimes it`s just a fluke, I have had many over the years and all different brands from cheapo`s to high dollar pistols and a lot of rifles. Centerfire too, and that will get you attention! Remington Golden bullets in my opinion are simply the worst .22 on the market and have been for over a decade, if there was or is one thing I would tell folks of rimfire.......even at $1.00 a brick...........walk by and never look back. I would clean the pistol very well, get some good ammo and give it another try, shooting glasses please, |

ty I always wear glasses when I shoot, I had some magazine problems before and ruger themselves told me not to use remington golden bullets. The lady I spoke with actually asked me were you using golden bullets by chance? and thats when she told me not to use them. I had a few left and I figured why not now I know why. Thanks for the info, The gun did fire ok with federal ammo after that incident the same day. JUNK

I had a different type of problem. Upon firing a round of CCI mini-mag ammo, there was quite a bit of smoke. A second round would not chamber. Upon further investigation I discovered that the rim of the fired round blew off and the case remained inside the barrel. The second round round could not chamber because of the reduced inside diameter of the barrel caused by the stuck casing. After removing the stuck case everything seemed to function fine. This was the first and I hope the last time this will happen.
