With all the problems of finding primers, I decided to order some of the pre-primed Federal cases from a little ole company up in TN. I got them in last night and started inspecting them today, getting ready to load some up for next week......... upon inspection, I discover that it's pre-lubed !! Nowhere did it say in the product description that these were pre-lubed with a porn-star sized serving of lube. I went ahead and proceeded forward anyways.......... now I've got the krud all over my expander die and I'm in the process of cleaning it. The stuff they put in there is the thickest lube I've ever seen,
Anyone have any ideas on what to do about this problem? I can't very well keep cleaning my dies every 2nd round. If they weren't already primed, I'd give them a thorough cleaning, but I really don't want to throw away 200 precious primers. I tried expanding as little as possible to get a bare minimum amount to set the bullet, but it still fouls the die too much.

My thought too. Might mess up the medium, but if it works, it might be worth it.

+1 with cycloneman. I've never seen cases like the ones you described. It sounds to me like someone at the factory forgot to degrease those cases.

I have no idea why these are lubed, there is a uniform ( and very thick ) ring of lube around the inside of the case at the mouth, approx 3/16" into the case. I'm hesitant to tumble them due to them being pre-primed and fouling the flash hole. The stuff is incredibly difficult to clean off the dies, only way I've found to clean the stuff off completely is a sparing amount of #9 and a Q-tip. I don't really care for the idea of any solvents near my dies either.............. needless to say, I'm not going to order any more of the Federal pre-primed. Thanks for the responses, I've never seen anything like this either; really has me scratching my head and thinking wth, wth, wth.

[QUOTE=woolleyworm;448135] If they weren't already primed, I'd give them a thorough cleaning, but I really don't want to throw away 200 precious primers. QUOTE]
I am keeping the primers well away from anything wet. I've been disassembling the die when I cleaned it and then very very thouroughly (sp?) dryed it. I have NO idea why they would lube them like that or my biggest question, which i did send a email to customer svc, Why wasn't this listed in the item description?? A slight oversight on their part I do think. I've got the idea to put them into my ZipTrim and heat them to about 200-250 with a very small butane torch. The low heat should not affect the temper at all and I'm hoping it will melt out. I'll attempt this on my next day off, Sun. Keep u posted. |

Update - The rounds that I did manage to get expanded and loaded have now been fired........ and there is still residue inside the case mouth. I have since tried to find a melting point for this stuff, I've come to the conclusion that it is NOT a lube, but rather a sealant. I've got an email into Federal, but no response back yet. I have found that a Q-tip with some isopropyl does manage to clean it out, so I'm going to do a little research on any possible side effects of using the isopropyl on the nickel cases. I'll keep everyone posted on Federals response, if they do answer back. Under no circumstances whatsoever, would I buy any of this again, what a royal pain in the kester!

Got reply back from Federal
"Chris: The ring is sealant and that is how we load those cartridge cases on our equipment. When removing the sealant, use caution so that it doesn't contaminate the primer. Thank You Federal Premium " MY REPLY - Dear Federal, Well, no poop ($%^&) that I've got to be careful not to contaminate the primer.............. how about a suggestion on what will get it out of there???????? |

What are they sealing inside the case mouth the bullet to the case? It's nonsense.

Well, I finally got a workable ( i'll refrain from calling it a decent ) solution to this problem. I left the sealant alone and am single staging them on my chucker. A real pain in the butt.
Even the once fired's that I've got has some residue in left behind. I can give it a quick clean a Q-tip and solvent and the case is clean enough not to foul up my dies for the second time around. Seating is very slow, I've got to line that sucker up dead nutz and then seat it slowly in order not to shave any jacketing off. Been going pretty well though, all things considered. I certainly wouldn't buy anymore of these, even if they were .05 a piece.

Bought 1000 rds of same from same source and the primed cases are without any lube. All is pristine. Maybe the issue was mixing what was to be used internally and what was shipped as primed brass only.
