Default comparing? the 10/22

Was just wondering what other 22lr semi auto rifle can compare to the Ruger 10/22? You know something with a high capacity magizine (and or tube) high fire rate reliability and good accuracy.

Marlin 60 always seems to come up.
I am sure there is a model of Savage that may fit this criteria also.

+1 on the Marlin model 60.

I own both and the Marlin holds more (14 vs. 10) ammo in the tube and is more accurate than the 10/22 out of the box.

But,
The 10/22 has more options for upgrades like mags, stocks, barrels and such. The only question is....

How much do you want to spend?

I have the Marlin 60 and 10/22 as well. The 60 is definitely more accurate than a plain jane 10/22 carbine out of the box. I also like the trigger feel of the 60 better than the 10/22. One down side of the 60 is that it gets dirty MUCH more quickly than the 10/22 as it has a tubular magazine with no place for the powder crud to evacuate until a good cleaning. The 10/22 really comes alive when you put a better barrel on. I've got the Butler Creek heavy barrel and stock and the gun is much more accurate at 50 yards than before.

If you're looking for a good rifle with removable magazine, with the accuracy more comparable to the Model 60, the Remington 597 comes to mind. The 597 accepts 30 round magazines for plinking around too.

marlin 60 for accuracy and the remington 597 for the feel of a real rifle and a 30 round magazine.

I don't have one, but I wonder how a Savage model 64 might compare?

I have shot both the marlin 60 and ruger 10/22 but not the remington 597 to me it seemed like the marlin had a better fire rate than the ruger but that could have been due to the trigger.

looks like im leaning towards the Ruger 10/22 simply because it can hold a 50 round magazine and can be customized more. you can swap out the trigger right?

If your intent is to modify the rifle, then the 10/22 wins hands down. Barrels, triggers, stocks are all available for modifying a 10/22. There are options available for the Marlin but they are limited by comparison to the 10/22. I converted my 10/22 into a bullpup with a muzzlelite stock set (stock takes a bunch of work to get it to function smoothly) and will not take any of the banana magazines. My 10/22 never liked the tear drop drums, I never tried the round ones in it.
The 10/22 is a nice reliable shooter but for out of the box accuracy the 597 and the Marlin 60 are superior. The 10/22 can be made to be as good if not better with some time and money but then you might as well pick up a bolt action CZ.

Just sayin.

You can spend as much on a 10/22 as you can on an AR15.

I think the trigger is the reason the Marlin can fire more quickly too... The Model 60 was the 2nd .22 I ever shot. The first was an old Stevens bolt action I believe. The 60's trigger is narrower for what I believe is a better feel and also has less travel than the 10/22.

Yeah, you can swap out trigger components or the entire trigger assembly for a sure fit and function on the 10/22. A complete trigger assembly from Volquartsen will run about $200. You can spend a LOT of money on a 10/22 but some would argue that it's pointless.

well than i think i would rather own both the marlin and the ruger just for the sake of having them its not like they are extremely expensive rifles. No point in sinking 200 more dollars in to the ruger if i can just purchase the marlin also for that price!

The 10-22 is a marvelous rifle with a few changes. Put a decent trigger assembly in it. Mabye a bolt and some internal parts. A good barrel. A Volquartsen action. A new stock. Then you have a marvelous rifle.

That's it... When you upgrade the 10/22 with a barrel and stock, you notice a couple of things. The extractor now fails to cycle unfired rounds because the chambers in after-market barrels are tighter for better accuracy. Now, you need a better extractor. Then, you notice that the bolt handle is too short to extend comfortably past the over-molded stock you purchased for the bull barrel. Then, you need a longer bolt handle. Next, you notice that your groups are VERY tight and you start questioning how you could decrease the effect of your trigger squeeze on accuracy, so you buy a better trigger assembly. Then, you get really loony and start theorizing that the last tenth of an inch of your group could be taken out by decreasing the lock time from when you pull the trigger to when the round is struck. So, you purchase lighter firing pins and stronger springs.

Pretty soon you have a $1,000 rifle that shoots about as good as a $300 Savage bolt action. 10/22's are addictive.

I'll equate making a 10/22 a tack driver to attempting to make a Honda Civic a serious drag car. It can be done but does it make sense, and how much will it cost?...

I have "had" a number of 10/22s.
I have had a number of M-60s, and still do.

But my go to fun gun for a 22 rifle is my AT-22.
It does have only 20 round mags max.
Never had a problem of any kind with it.

Pictures are borrowed from their site.
Mine doesn't look "quite" like this one.
Just wanted to show that a 10/22 doesn't have much over a Feather, if this "style" is what you like.

Mine is a little closer to this one.

Hey Pick, the 10mm version of that gun looks really interesting. I'd like to have one of those!

So after you get your 10-22 all fixed up, the next thing you need is a pair of these:
