Anyone use a period Lyman Target spot or Unertl on their target .22`s?
Fine crosshair or dot and what power?

Vintage gun......

I have a Unertl 12x on my varmint rifle although it's not a .22; .240 Cobra built on a '98 Mauser. I have had .22 target rifles in the past with both Fecker and Litschert scopes. I prefer the Unertl with fine crosshair, although the others worked well also. For general target use, I think 8x to 12x is just fine. For varmint hunting with a .22 at extended ranges, 100 yards plus, i would go with a 16x or 20x.

Edit: I almost forgot, elevation and windage adjustment knobs with micrometer reading is definitely preferred.

I have a 10x unertl target scope on a 222 very nice scope has the fine crosshair with the micrometer adjustment turrets

Good choice the Unertl, I have a 16X varmit and a 20X Programmer. I also really like and own a couple of the old Redfield 3200 scopes, 16X, and 24X, while have a period look, are sealed and nitrogen filled, with internal adjustments, like any modern scope. They, to me, are as good as my Unertl's, and are much more like a modern scope. These are not easy to find, and when you do, try and get one complete with not only the original ring mounts, but the hard case that came with it new as well. I have no experiance with the Lyman, but hear good things, and want to try one. Best regards, Kirk

I've had 3 Unertl's and like the optics. The biggest drawback is expensive bases and getting the right eye relief. For example, an Ultra-varmint on a M70 with a 13 1/2" LOP on bases for 7.2" base separation makes causes neck strain trying to get close to the scope. I prefer a pad on an '06 vs. plate.

have used Unertl 20X fine and a Unertl 10X medium on my 40Xremington rimfire. Both served well, but the 10X is better for Offhand. I use the 10X for 4 position matches. We shoot up to 200 yds. also. The 20x is now on a 30-338 rem 40x.
