Check with your ramrod and make sure you have powder in it. Dumber things have happened.

If you have seated a ball w/o powder, pull the nipple and work some powder into the bolster (preferably FFFg.) CAREFULLY put the nipple back in and fire a cap. Pull the nipple and work some more powder in (it should take more, this time.) Replace the nipple and SEAT THE BALL. Fire. Repeat this until the ball clears the barrel.

If you have a true failure to fire:
Remove the nipple. Clean the nipple with the nipple pick. Clean the bolster with the nipple pick. Bend a pipecleaner to go "around the corner" of the bolster and stir that around a bit. Fill the bolster with black powder (FFFg, if you have it) and turn it and rop it to make some powder go into the breech. Replace the nipple CAREFULLY (there might be a grain or two of powder in the threads. Won't usually go off, but... ,) recap and try again. Do this twice, if necessary, reseating the ball after the first try.

If this doesn't work, remove the nipple, strip the barrel out of the stock and put it in a bucket of water for an hour or so, bolster down. Then get the ball puller and yank that puppy out of there. It is going to be REALLY hard coming out, so don't use your ramrod for this. Use a steel or shotgun size aluminum rod. Put your feet on the T-handle and grab the barrel with your hands about belly button down. Lie on your back and push with your feet, don't pull with your back.

As you can tell: Been there, done that.

Pops, Yep she's loaded!...took the nipple out and cleaned it...ran a pipe cleaner down through the "Firing Hole"...went into "The Big City" and picked up some Remington caps "40% Hotter"...still no good!...I think I used too much "Bore Butter" in the barrel...and didn't get it dried/cleaned out enough!... ...Here's the wounded bird just lying after trying the Remington caps... ...

Did you work powder into the bolster while you had the nipple out? This is an important step in clearing a misfire. Work a little powder into the bolster and replace the nipple. Fire. Pull the nipple and work some powder into it. It should take a few grains more this time. Then replace the nipple, RESEAT the ball and fire again. I recommend you do this only twice, because of the possibility of forgetting to RESEAT the ball. I have had to work through this step as many as 5 or 6 times to clear a real stuborn one.

When taking the rifle out to shoot, it is important to swab the bore with a couple of dry patches. Then snap TWO or three caps without a load in front of them. On the second, hold the muzzle near a blade of grass, a small leaf, some dust, etc. and see that something comes out of the barrel. If you don't get a poof out of the muzzle, keep cleaning and snapping caps until you do.

The is gizmo on the market which attaches to the nipple (or in place of the nipple) which will blow a charge out with a CO2 cartridge.

Keep me posted.

SG, that co2 discharger is the best 15 bucks that I have ever spent although I have never had to use it yet. One of my buddys is always having misfires cause he forgets to put in powder and he uses his all the time works like a charm. The main reason I bought one is for hunting season then I dont have to fire the gun to empty it,just puff it out and run a patch thru it and put her away saves alot of cleaning.

BB,
Where did you find it for 15? I haven't looked at them for a couple of years, but they were about twice that then. I would spring for one at that price.

AAS I bought mine at Cabelas for 17.99,I just looked them up and they are now 18.99.Well worth the money if you ask me. They make adapters for inlines and musket caps also.
SG whats up with the bore butter? do you cut your own patches? If I may I will make a suggestion for future use buy pre-lubed patches and this will help eliminate this problem. I have been very fortunate and have not had a misfire. I have fired around 250 balls from my 2 rifles with no problems. Also what powder are you using?
And for my final comment in this reply Cabelas citris cleaner is also some wonderful stuff for those times when you dont take the time to do a good soap and water cleaning. It is kinda spendy but it lasts a very long time as you do not use much at all, just a little bit in a baby food jar enuf to soak the amount of patches you have in there and you are all set. works really good for those days when you are gonna shoot all day and want to clean between shots.

And no I do not work for Cabelas just a loyal customer........LOL

SG: It happens to all of us, eventually. I had a misfire at the shootout because I got so interested in showing off, I didn't fire the clearing caps before loading. Had to pull the nipple, clean everything, dribble some powder, and listen to the triple crack. Oh, well.

BB, your time is a'comin'.

BB's right about the borebutter. I use the liquid version for lubing the bbl after cleaning. I soak a patch with it and swab while the bore is still hot.

I know it is but I am all prepared with my trusty Co2 discharger when it happens. I keep in my possibles bag for that special moment in every BP shooters life....lol
As for lubing my barrel after cleaning I just moisten a patch with 3in1 oil and run it down the barrel. I do check my bore often with my bore light to make sure that I have no rust.
I was learned that if a fellas in a hurry that he best leave smoke poles alone. Take your time and do it right.

3in1 is good stuff, but I made the decision to not use any petroleum products on my BP. Just 'cause, that's why. I really like the natural lube, both grease and liquid. And, it smells soooo good.

FN_Project90: These nipples you unscrew.

Bout that time of year again. Gotta dust off the wall hanger...hunt up the powder flask and see what happens. I'll post some targets before halloween...I picked up a dancing, singing werewolf last night...oh yeah, back to shooting

Was deer hunting one time, had a little spike walk up to about 20 yards and decided to take him, pulled the trigger and POP....cap went off but nothing else...deer just hopped around a bit and looked at me like I was nutz, put a new cap on and same thing...deer just hopped around and looked at me again like" leave me alone I'm lookin for a girl friend".
I kid you not, this went on for 10 caps before I finally just gave up, the spike never ran of until I stood up.
It had rained the night before and I guess the powder had drawed moisture or something. I had to take the nipple out, poke some powder in and finally got the gun to shoot.
The joys of BP hunting

I've not gone so far as 10 caps, but I did have a coyote walk up to within about 20 feet of my blind, while I was dribbling powder into the bolster and getting the nipple back in. I was getting real nervous before I got the rifle back in service.
