Reasonably sized? The mentality might be valid if you have small hands. I have large hands...you DID see the picture of me groping that chick...i have ape hands... so i am not as concerned with grip size. A G21 feels just fine in my hands. I have a Ruger GP101 that the grip is too small... The 1911 is not obsolete. I do wish the springs didn't need to be changed so often but its far from obsolete. Everytime someone starts talking about the 40 as being such a great round...the first thought that comes to mind is Why Not the 10mm instead? mike gn

Of course the 1911 is an outdated design. It came from an era when weapons were designed to win fights, not to avoid product liability lawsuits. It came from an era where it was the norm to learn how your weapon operated and to practice that operation until it became second nature, not to design the piece to the lowest common denominator. It came from an era in which our country tried to supply its fighting men with the best tools possible, unlike today, when our fighting men and women are issued hardware that was adopted because of international deal-making or the fact that the factory is in some well-connected congressman's district. Yes, beyond any shadow of a doubt, the 1911 IS an outdated design....and that's exactly what I love about it. It's reliability assisted me to defeat my enemy when I served in the US Army. It's accuracy assisted me to defeat the street Nazis when I was a Homicide Detective. It's trigger allowed me to save lives while on SWAT/Hostage Rescue. As a fine wine, when you desire the very best - it is 1911. The next time you are in Orlando come visit me and I will show you how obsolete the 1911 is. ![]()

The 1911 Obsolete? Not really. The only thing that's new is composite grips and newer calibers. I'd put my life on the line with my old Colt .45, and that of my family. You might as well say cars are obsolete, too, as they are 19th century technology. What about revolvers? They are definitely obsolete, but people keep buying them. I wouldn't junk the old slab sided .45 just yet. TJ

i think the main reason for the 40 instead of the 10mm is the ease of finding a weapon in 40, coupled with the price of ammo. if i could get 10mm cheaper than 40, i wouldnt own a 40. it all comes down to that green paper

uhh..
1. why are people still arguing about caliber? If you want something cheaper that you can shoot faster and with more control go with 9mm/ .357 or whatnot. If you want something big and hunky that would probably cause more damage per shot on a given target but is a bit harder to shoot quickly/ with more control go with .45 or if you do your own reloads you can use .40 and either load it light for quick shooting and less recoil or you can load it hot so its a bit more punchy. 2. what is wrong with the 1911 design? |

FWIW, I believe it comes down to caliber first, gun second. For me the best is the 40 SandW. I have a couple of Glock 23s as back up for my home defense primary: 20 ga with 3 Buck.
Carry is a separate issue for me. I am not content with trigger safeties so I do not carry Glocks albeit I carried them 20 years on the job with no accidents.. Also, it is generally too warm here (fl) for outside the wasteband hosters. So, I most often carry a 380 Bersa with Corbon 90s, Cancealed Carry model, in my pocket...in cooler weather I carry a Smith 66 2.5in with 38+ps. There are smaller and more powerful handguns than the Bersa but I find I shoot that one the best. In all cases, the most important issue is rounds on target so practice a lot with whatever weapon you choose. |

I have 3 Glock 40's (22,23,27) for carry and for home defense. I prefer the 40 S&W round because it flies at 9mm rate, with a larger round. Mass x velocity is a formidable combination. I load the 40's with CorBon 135 HP (1325 ft per second). There is a reason the Glock 22 is the most widely used pistol by law enforcement.
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/m...g=content;col1 However, I did just purchase a new Springfield Loaded 1911 to replace my old MilSpec that I gave to my son. ![]()

Sounds like a Glock 19 would fit your bill perfectly.

Ruger Sp 101 with a 3" Barrel - Stainless Steel and .357. Concealable, powerful and ultra-reliable. Last edited by BigEasy; 09-08-2009 at 08:09 PM.. |

The Bersa .380 is a good, reliable, inexpensive and accurate firearm. But right now ammunition is scarce.
My pocket carry is a Kel-Tec .32 with an extra 10 round clip(Texas hot weather).

or put the 9mm bbl in the cz52 or make the sig 40 into a 357 sig or a 9 if my mood be foul, perhaps the 40 top on the p-11 take out my j-frames and swap the grips around ...life is good....life is fun...till the wife gets home.... Last edited by Claude Clay; 10-26-2009 at 01:46 PM.. |

Not the cheapest - but you get what you pay for
Kahr PM9 loaded with Hornady Critical Defense ammo. Because of the ccw issue. If you want a great Range gun and are large framed enough to conceal a full size 9 The FNP9 can't be beat ![]()

I carry the Ruger LCR 38 sp +P as it is light but doesnt kick too hard, is easy to conceal and is (hopefully) powerfull enough to do the job. I sometimes also carry the Ruger LCP .380 as a back-up to the LCR. When the weather cools down in SW Florida, I will carry my 1911 .45. Big Steve, I hope that you find the right weapon for you.
