circa 1850's damascus barreled side by side muzzleloading shotgun - The Firearms Forum

I have in my possession a muzzleloading damascus barreled shotgun. The gun is very reminiscent of the period with a straight stock, double hammer percussion, wooden ramrod. There are no visble markings/ stamps/name regarding the manufacturer. The only distinguishing characteristics on the gun is hand checkering on the grip, an early version of a monte carlo stock, and a very intricately carved head of what looks to be an of an african male with headdress. Definitely not of a native american indian. Any clues on how I would go about getting more info on this piece? Thanks

Your first step should be to post some photos. I have a very similar gun, tho there is no checkering on the stock. Take the barrel out of the stock, and you will probably find some markings underneath where you can not otherwise see them.
