Hello,
I just bought a Smith & Wesson Model 48-4, serial number 244K1xx with a 8 3/8" barrel. It's in very good shape but I can't find anything about the gun, i.e. what it's worth. It's says on the barrel M.R.F. CTG. I think it's a 22 WMR but I know nothing about revolvers. Every WMR I've seen says WMR but this one doesn't. I also bought from the same guy a S & W 357 model 686-3 4 inch barrel nickel in great shape. Serial number BHE66xx. I have no idea about this one either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Harvey

Harvey-dont have my SW book here at work, but your gun is probably late '70s early '80s. Someone with the cataglog can norrow that downfor you. It is chambered for .22 Magnum. My 6" is very accurate. Mine likes the Winchester ammo YMMV. Great gun, with that barrel good for small game hunting.

125Kxxx to 269Kxxx were all made in 1982. Looks like 244Kxxx falls in there.

BHE guns were made in early '91.
Also it's not nickel. It's stainless. All S&W stainless guns start with a number 6, and none of their non-stainless ones do. Some of them got entirely new numbers - the stainless model 19 is a model 66 - and some of them they just added the 6 to it - the stainless model 29 is a 629 - but they all start with 6.

Wow, I really didn't know anything about them. I paid $500.00 for the 357 with a leather holster and $250.00 for the 22 mag. I hope togather I didn't pay to much and really I don't think it would bother me if I did because I love them both.
Thanks for the info Alpo! Harvey |

500 for a 4" 686 is probably about right. More than I would pay, but I'm cheap. Depends on the holster. I've got leather holsters that cost 15 bucks
![]() and leather holsters that cost waaay over 100. ![]() I max out on a Smith revolver at 450. Just refuse to pay more. 'Course, there's a lot of 'em I don't get 'cause people won't come down that far. ![]() On the other hand, 250 for that 48 was a helluva deal. I probably wouldn't have got it because I don't like 22 magnum. Cost too much. I can reload 38s for less than they cost. But for 250 I might have bought it, and looked into getting a 22LR cylinder fitted to it.
