Bulldog pug

A friend of mine is thinking of picking up
a new charter arms .44 special bulldog pug.
for a camping carry.
Cats the only thing he'll have to worry about,
that and the occasional nut case.
Any opinions?

The Charter Arms name has been in and out of business several times. Some of their products were good, some not so good, and some unacceptable.

They are a sound mechanical design; but have been plagued with quality control issues over the years.

Hopefully, the new owners of the name and tooling are making quality products.

I tend to repeat the advice of a little Superstar lady of the late 19th century, who a famous Lakota Chief named "Little Miss Sure-shot". "There are many good guns; but one is wise not to trust ones life to a cheap gun"

My first pistol was a Charter Arms Target Bulldog. 4" 5-shot 18 ounce 357. Shot every time. Grip was very comfortable, and help in taming the recoil. One of the ways they got the weight down was it had a steel barrel inside an aluminum barrel-shroud. Looked like a heavy-barrel Smith. Shroud was held in place with a set-screw. Front sight was on the shroud. After a few 357s, shroud started moving around. Hard to be accurate when your front sight is not in the same place, shot after shot. Bad design.

I had a Charter Arms AR-7. Fired every time. Did not feed from the magazine every time, though. Kinda annoying.

I have, currently, a Charter Arms Undercover. 5-shot J frame size 2" 38. It does NOT fire every time. It has been to a gunsmith and been repaired. It still does NOT fire every time. Sometimes, but not EVERY time. Firing EVERY time is very important to me.

The new Charter Arms company says that for 45 dollars, they will repair my Undercover. Part of that 45 is to pay to have it shipped back to me. Not too bad, really, except that it will also cost 50 bucks to ship it to them. 95 dollars to get my 100 dollar gun fixed. I don't think so.

I have no experience with the NEW Charter Arms company. My experience with the OLD Charter Arms has not been positive. Based on that, I would not buy from the NEW Charter Arms. If they do make good guns, they should have come up with a different name. This name has too much of a bad reputation.

Tell your friend to do himself a big favor. Tell him to save up a few more
dollars and buy a Smith & Wesson or a Colt, or even a Taurus. He will be way better
off.

no the the Charter Arms. Get a Smith if he has the money. If the money is a little off, get a Ruger sp 101. Small, but strong enough to take a beating.
