Default How many points?

Just curious on how you count points.
I know it's different in other states,
or is it regional?
Here we count one side of the rack.
How about you?

I don't count by points. I go strictly inches.

Generally in the south we count both sides.

Michigan was both sides and Arkansas is both sides. In Colorado we called them a 4x4, 3x3, 6x5 etc

Yep both sides in Arkansas. If a ring will stay on it is a point for bragging rights. If you are in a big buck contest there is usually a mininum length the point must be, like one inch, to be scorable.

I'm with you Kutaho, count the side with the most points, and eye guards don't count. It's a sort of stuborn Northwest thing I think...

In Texas, we count all the points. I've always used the 4x4 for Mule Deer & Elk but count all points on a Whitetail.

I think the smilies changed again

Here we do the 6X6 or a 6 pointer, a 4X4 would be a 4 pointer not an 8 pointer.

I think it's a regional thing. In Eastern states that only have itty bitty whitetails, they count all the points, including eyeguards. In Western states, where we have monster mulies, we only need to count one side, without including eyeguards. We take the eyeguards as a given. So.... a four point for us here would be a ten point for them over yonder.

I think the rules that determine what makes a point are the same. Got to be able to hang a ring on it.

Why worry about the points at all if you are only going to count half of them anyway.

Thumbs up Re: How many points?

Here in "my" part of Quebec we count both sides and they have to be at least 1 inch or be able to hang a ring from . We also count em' all , stickers, brow tines you name it ............ my first deer was a 9 point and my biggest was a heavy 13 point brute!

Y'all are just trying to make them little whitetails sound bigger, is all. We don't need to do that. We know our mulies are big!

Hmmmm..... my exhusband shot a 2 x 4 once. Big deer. Had four nice long tines on one side (plus eyeguards, of course) and just the two outside tines on the other side. 2 x 4. Ha!

I was born and raised in the PNW, so imagine my eyeballs when I heard some of the point counts when I moved to the Hill Country of Texas. One evening, I thought I saw my neighbor dressing out a German Shepard, but come to find out it was a deer! They would migrate to Horseshoe Bay and what is that other community...Blue Lake, is that right, kingchip? Hunting was ban there. You could walk up to them with your empty hand out and they'd walk right up to you. Shoot, they were so tiny and inbred, you could kill them with a pen knife if you wanted.

I definately thought some wildlife management was needed in that area.

Yea, the whole south side of the lake is pretty much off limits for hunting. There are way too many deer for the habitat, and very small because of it. I have seen some decent bucks over there, but the body size is pathetic.

You must be close by. Care to share?

Last deer I shot probably dressed 40 pounds. Four point. Had him hanging from a tree in the front yard, cleaning him, and a neighbor wanted to know why I was cleaning a dog.

Yeah, I always heard it was "western count" and "eastern count".
