Default Springfield mil spec

Whats the good bad and ugly on these boom sticks? Was about to buy a used one in decent condition till a friend told me they're junk. Whatcha all think?

I want a "no frills" classic 1911. Are there any others out there to consider?

First of all, I'd find a new friend cause that one has no clue what he's talking about. Buy it and be happy.

i had a milspec gi model and it was a good gun. i eventually had the ejection port lowered and flared cause it would drop an occasional casing on top of my head.

Haha, hey John. I'm the same guy asking bout it in "what's it worth".

Well, I just called him again (our last conversation was rushed) cause I wanted to clear it up. He said nothing is wrong with them functionally, he just thinks 1911s are ugly. Oh well.

The used one I was looking at was sold. Gonna keep my eyes peeled for another or possibly new if my checkbook will allow it.

What are the major differences between the GI and mil-spec? I know of the flared and lowered ejection port. To save $ I could probably stand a casing or two hitting me on the head. Any other reason I should go mil-spec over GI?

What a brick. You won't carry that around for very long.

While we are talking about GI and Mil spec 1911's I have a question.I have a para ordnance 1911 GI on order(my first 1911)when talking about lowering of the ejection port what purpose does it serve.does it speed up the whole process of ejection and reloading.Just wondering.

The Para GI Expert comes with a lowered and flaired ejection port. The early1911 pistol was bad about crushing cases. No big deal unless you reload or shoot IPSC or IDPA matches but it sure looks cool doesn't it.

I'll look and see if I can find a pic of the SA Mil-Spec after the upgrades. DUH, all the upgrades on this one were internal. A real shooter.

How is it a better platform? What's the difference?

graehaven - I've been on their site many times. I just like getting info from people with first-hand experience. Much more informative.

there is a few differances between a GI and a milspec model. the sights, the ejection port, the barrel is stainless on a milspec, blued on a GI. the GI has a lanyard loop on the mainspring housing other than that i think they are the same.

Mine had to go back to Springfield for a new extractor and to have the barrel reamed, but since then it's been perfect. I like it.

Upside is, if you have a problem, Springfield has a great lifetime warranty. They even pay shipping.

Everyone allways wants to get an "entry level" 1911... and later they wish they would have held out for an upgraded one.

Hold out and get a Springfield. That is my advice.

i wanted a base line 1911, but i heard nothing but good about the springfield. so i picked up my first handgun, a springfield G.I. for $600 out the door. I have no complaints about the gun, great shooter, and even with the weight, i carry it daily with no complaints about the weight, or size.

i have noticed a few dents on the casings, and i plan to have the port lowered soon. the sights dont bother me for the range, but im thinking of a new set, maybe with a fiber optic front. I polished the feed ramp, barrel, and slide rails myself, and it is good old reliable. I have 0 complaints about the gun. best 600 i ever spent, very happy.

Hey, thanks for the info goneracin. A $600 1911 that's reliable and straight shooting...can't beat that! Good project gun too.

I bought a Mil-Spec as my first 1911 .45. Loved it at first then started to have a few problems. First the front sight came loose, then the plunger tube popped off. Sent it off to SA and they did a great job on the fixes with a quick turn around. Around 2700 rounds the lower lugs sheared off the barrel. Currently back at SA for a new barrel.

I really do not trust this gun anymore.

What do you mean a brick, with a good gunbelt and holster it's very comfortable. I carry mine 8-12 hrs a day.

I guess I'm old school,I DO NOT like beavertails, the ambi safety adjustable sights, don't need lowered ejection ports for a carry gun.All I need is dependability and that's what I have in my Springfield GI basic.
