I was looking at this american rifleman today and there was a recall on remington ..17 hmr amo and not to use in the model 597 or other semi-auto's does anyone know the story behind the story.

Remington will provide you with a $10.00 coupon for each complete box of 50 rounds of Remington branded 17 HMR ammunition you return to Remington. This coupon is for end users only and will be good for the purchase of any Remington ammunition at your local dealer.

OK...you cant use Remington ammo or Winchester ammo in a semi-automatic .17 rifle....so just WHAT should you use????

so if remington is recalling their 17hmr,and buying back their rifles, are they going to buy back other 17 hmr cal. semi autos?

I think the only semi 17 HRM Remington made is the 597, and only they are being recalled. The 17HRM operates at 26,00 psi where the 22Mag and the 22lr. operate at 24,000 psi.. They upped the preasure a bit to get more performance out of the 17, giving it more velocity. The problem is that the HRM round is dangerously close to the limit of the brass rim to contain the preasure. If the breech face of the bolt is only a couple of thousand's out of battery, and the case head is blown off, it sometimes damages the rifle, and worse the shooter. It does not seem to be a problem in a bolt action platform, only semi auto's. Interestingly the 5mm Remington Mag runs at 33,000 psi......but the rifle was devolped with the case surrounded by steel with not extractor cuts for the case to fail at. But that is another story...

I don't read or at least I don't see where it says anything about Winchester ammo. I suppose that you could use CCI, Hornady, or any other brand (just not Remington) but as I read, that is only in semi auto rifles. I also suppose that you could still use the Remington ammo in bolt action rifles. It also does not say anything about .17Mach2 ammo!
