Default Any Idiot "glocknut" with a chainsaw can cut a tree down...

I got the tree trimmed today. It was an adventure. One of the residents loaned me an extension ladder which helped greatly. I still have enough arm strength to cut some limbs one handed. Had no choice... i was hanging onto tree limb with other arm.

The ladder was proped up wrong and it twisted on me once and i had saucers for eyeballs there for a moment. Especially since i was cutting one handed...

Those chain saws are dangerous tools. They don't bother me too much when cutting a downed tree but getting up on a ladder and cutting 3" or less diameter limbs that want to move while being cut...makes me nervous. If i had my own land i would have to say the best way to trim trees is with a Dozer...

Doing a lot of that here since last winters wind and ice storms with a whole lot more to do. I have been tying off my ladder against the trunk or a secure branch and working from there. Make sure your ladder is stable before attempting the cut. Be sure your saw blade is sharp. A dull blade in this case can cause you serious problems. Don't reach beyond where you are in danger of over balancing. Try to anticipate any whip back from the limb you are cutting. Work safe GN. We don't want to loose you. You are one of a kind. (Thank God).

Well i got er done. I don't plan on having to do it again. I trimmed it back pretty good.

I don't think i will ever trim a tree again. Its a completely different ballgame from cutting the tree down and taking it apart for firewood.

This reminds me of when my dad was still alive. I was gone to the next town over and my cell phone rings and its dad. All he is saying is "call an ambulance" and sounding very desperate. So I called 911 and then a friend who both got there around the same time. He was laying spralled out on the ground and the ladder was knocked over and the chainsaw was laying there running. He was on the ladder trimming a branch with the chainsaw and the branch came down and knocked him off ballance and he broke a vertebre in his back and had to have surgery. Lucky he still had all of his limbs. No pun intended. So Mike, let this be a lesson learned!

Smaller trees can be cut down quickly with
a 10 Guage magnum shotgun.

Larger trees can be brought down with a magazine of .308s.

If I have to climb a tree, and I have one I have to climb every other year, the chain saw stays on the ground, and one of these and a pair of pruning shears goes up the tree with me.

I spent years in the woods with a chain saw, and have done a lot of dumb things with them, but climbing a tree with a chain saw isn’t one of them. Hire someone who does that for a living. Safest and quickest way to get a chain saw up a tree is to let someone who knows what they are doing do it.

I heated our house with wood for five years. I cut and split every piece myself. I had a hard fast rule. Never make a chainsaw cut above shoulder level. You have to have it so you can use your body weight to control it. If it kicks back and is above shoulder level it is almost impossible to control the saw with only arm strength. I NEVER cut off a ladder. The small chainsaws in my opinion are more likely to hurt you than the bigger saws. The small ones you may try to use one handed and the heavy ones you won't do that.
Clocknut you are lucky , thank goodness.

I know this is supposed to be lighthearted, but as a 10 year veteran of tree work, leave any work up in the trees off the ground, and any potentially dangerous felling (to both life and property) to well trained professionals. It may be expensive, but not as nearly so as a hospital bill or a grave site.

Please, leave the tree work to professionals. Proper training and technique goes along ways in tree work. If you do not have any, limit the chainsaw work to firewood. And even at that, please use your head. I promise every single person in this room, treework is far more dangerous than anything involving guns and reloading (short of purposeful shootings of course.) I would sooner use a reload that someone "filled to the top" with gunpowder than hand a person a chainsaw to a person in a tree without significant training AND common-sense.

What some people do not realize is the level of danger involved in treework. An easy way to measure is by the cost of workman's compensation insurance which runs well over 40 cents for every dollar that the employee makes. Keep in mind that in some states the rate is under 5 cents for every dollar that a police officer makes.

Leave dangerous work to professionals.

It would have probably been better if i had gone and rented one of those electric saws on an extension pole. Still dangerous but alot better than cutting one handed with a Husq 350 chainsaw while on a ladder....
