Wish this was an article on the front page of every newspaper in America---in large bold letters. I know that there are similar incidents in the ER of all hospitals......
This was a "letter to the editor" in a recent Jackson, MS newspaper. Dear Sirs: "During my last night's shift in the ER, I had the pleasure of evaluating a patient with a shiny new gold tooth, multiple elaborate tattoos, a very expensive brand of tennis shoes and a new cellular telephone equipped with her favorite R&B tune for a ringtone. Glancing over the chart, one could not help noticing her payer status: Medicaid. She smokes more than one costly pack of cigarettes every day and, somehow, still has money to buy beer. And our president expects me to pay for this woman's health care? Our nation's health care crisis is not a shortage of quality hospitals, doctors or nurses. It is a crisis of culture - a culture in which it is perfectly acceptable to spend money on vices while refusing to take care of one's self or, heaven forbid, purchase health insurance. A culture that thinks "I can do whatever I want to because someone else will always take care of me". Life is really not that hard. Most of us reap what we sow. Don't you agree? STARNER JONES, MD Jackson, MS

And, she's a voter!
That's the one thing I'd like changed. You don't get to vote until you're a property owning tax payer (sans military personnel - if you serve - you should ALWAYS have a vote). That, though, probably wouldn't fix anything either.

Have seen this kind of thing for years. I have watched people not pay for a $5 antibiotic (pass it up completely) for a child, yet they had a pack of cigs in their front pocket. I have seen individuals on state assistance drive new(er) cars.
The worst I have seen was a lady about 15 or 20 years ago who presented a coupon while talking on a cell phone (when they were new and HUGE). Diamond rings. Manicured nails. Hair that was obviously done up by someone other than herself. Very nice cloths..... This is something that will never end. And yes......we, the taxpayers pay for this. It has gotton more difficult over the years in this state to pull these stunts, but lazy people will find a way.
