Default Most accurate 22lr rifle for under $400?

I am in the market for something better than my 10/22 and marlin 25N. Bolt or single shot does not matter, just accuracy and decent price. How well does the contender stack up against the bolt actions? I have a contender frame to use. Thanks

For less than $400 I would go with the CZ 452 Trainer or Scout:

The Savage MK II's are very good. Several sub-models in your price range. I'd certainly recommend you look at them.

I to would recommend either the Savage MK II-BTV, or one of the MK II-FV's. These rifles are amazingly accurate, the MK II-BTV more so I feel. I gave my son one of these BTV's for Christmas and now it's all I can do to keep up with him on group size with my FV, which is no slouch for accuracy, but it's not a BTV... Fantastic rifle - those BTV's.

Marlin 60 or 795, hands down, both well under $200

Heck, the 795 ($129 everywhere) even has a $25 rebate!!

You want a good target rifle or rodent killer the Remington 513-T is about the best tack driver you can get. These things are nice,You will have to shop around to find one cuz I dont think they are on the market anymore but I have seen a few at gun shows.

Cool Re: Most accurate 22lr rifle for under $400?

Well MartinL, I see there are a lot of choices here. I myself have the Marlin 881 bolt that also think of being a good rifle as well.

As long as you choose whatever is recommended here, I am sure you cannot go wrong. Good luck!

What about just add a $150 Butler Creek .920" barrel and stock combo to your 10/22? I did that and my 10/22 is now a seriously accurate rifle with the right ammo. I topped it off with a 6-18 x 40 Adjustable Objective scope. It's just plain fun. I've got a Savage Mark II as well along with a Marlin Model 60 but the 10/22 is the most fun to shoot now that it can put the bullet where I point.

The most accurate .22 I have ever seen or shot is a TU 33/40 sold by NCA Ridgefield, NJ. I bought one in the 80's and it is a Chinese (don't laugh) copy of a K-98 trainer in .22. It is BR50 quality and accuracy. I have a Nicoles 4X32 scope on it and I would wager it would shoot as well or better than any $400 - $500 rifle on the market. Beautiful workmanship and nicely finished. If I knew how to attach a picture of it would. I do not know if they are made or imported anymore.

Can I get one for $400 or less? If not, I don't understand why you posted in this thread, i.e. Most Accurate 22lr rifle for under $400.

Look forward to your reply.

I wouldn't give up on the 10-22. Put a new barrel, bolt, receiver, trigger parts and stock on it and it if a fabulous rifle.

It takes far less than replacing the 'rifle' to make it work well. If you already have a 10/22 and don't want to spend a lot, a barrel and stock will get you where you want to be for cheap. A trigger job wouldn't hurt but isn't expensive either. For not a lot of investment you can have a VERY accurate rifle and money left over...

I got that one for 380. Ones I have een seeing at the shows been right at 400. Well at least the last three shows I went to. There is a dealer up in Lexington KY that had two of em for 350 and 375 a few weeks back. They are out there you just got to locate one. If I run across another one I will let you know. You interested in one?

i hate to push a foreign maker but the CZ is awsome. will out shoot the rest of the guns mentioned. I have several and all are tack drivers. i think its the steel barrels, that are under size( smaller bore than others) makes the ammo fit better, mine shoots CCI mini mags best. 10 shots one ragged hole at 50 yds. i've got 10/22's and ruger 77.22.s not even close. i especially like the CZ 452 American. I put a Eric Brooks trigger kit in it. for a 2 pound no creep pull. lite but efficent. Caution, dont try to pull a 22 cal. bore snake through one. Try it , you'll like it. rd

I & my sons just bought Savage model 93's in .17HMR. First off the fit and finish leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion. We dialed them in and they shot very good at the 80 yards we had to shoot.
Son #2 says boy this kicks the **** out of our .22's. I said wait a minute & I grabbed my CZ 452-2E-ZKM .22 and proceeded to put some 5 shot groups out that compared very well with the .17 for a LOT cheaper plinking fun. Now my hands were getting cold and i just grabbed some Remington yellow jackets out of a bulk box so with some top notch rounds I'd say at that distance pretty close for an average shooter like my self. And we weren't shooting from a good bench or rest just having some fun.
I then got my first ever .22 out my old Nylon 76 black beauty. I had a lot of fun as a young fellow with this gun but I wouldn't want to have only 5 bullets and have to eat for week.

My Ruger 10/22 Target with the hammer forged heavy barrel, adjustable Fajen stock is quite accurate. My best 10 shot group is a 1.17" at 100 yards but I can shoot 3 or 5 shot groups all day around 1/2" with (at the time $5/box) wolf match ammo.
The gun was right at the $400 mark.

That said, I still want a heavy barrel .22 bolt gun to use with my suppressor that is accurate. Between what should be even better accuracy, with a quieter action, that would be one squirrel getting machine. I am tempted by the Ruger 77 but they are just too expensive for what they are.

I like the idea of a new barrel and stock for your 10/22. I have one and will eventually make those upgrades myself. I've already replaced my trigger and sear.

I also like my Marlin Model 60. It is very accurate with CCI Mini Mags and shoots the cheap stuff pretty well too.
