SIG-Sauer P.225 (Its a discontinued model, ya know?)
S&W M&P (NOT compact)

I would not consider the other two.

I would consider an offering, of some sort, from CZ.

1)P225 -I have one and love it
2)Glock 19...I have shot these and they are very solid as welll as the most popular 9mm in the US possibly.
3)M&P Compact-I have heard very much good news about these.
4)I have heard good news, but not much feed backk at all really...kind of came and went.

Many people will come along and give this same advice. If you have an indoor range that will rent firearms, go in and try to rent each of these and fire them. It's not enough to just handle the gun in the shop, you need to fire it to see how it feels to you.

For me, as an example, I will never like shooting a Glock. The finger grooves that are molded into the frame don't go between my fingers like they should... the points of the grooves hit right in the middle of my fingers, so when I'm shooting those nubs wear my fingers out.

I've not shot the P225, but I have shot many other Sig pistols and I would have to put anything from Sig at the top of the list out of your choices.

Next, the M&P, though like Popeye said I would prefer the full size to the compact.

The SW99 was an okay pistol for what it was, but I think I liked the original Walther P99 better. I would be torn between this and the Glock. The Glock would probably be more customizable, which I would like, but I would try to find one of the early models before they started molding the finger grooves into everything they make.

Just my two-cents worth.

Just a suggestion out of your 4 choices. CZ P01 or 2075 RAMI (sub compact)

The Sig 225 or 226 is a fine choice. I don't have any experience with the S&W MP or Ruger SR9. The Glock 19 is a reliable pistol but I don't like the grip angle. Here is another suggestion. You might try and locate a good use S&W 5906 or 659. These are the third and second generation semi-autos. Excellent gun. I would rank it up with the Sig. Another option would be a Browning Hi Power. But you will pay more. I do agree you should try as many guns as possible to find the one that works best for you.

Good luck,

I thought the P226 was Sig's full size 9mm?

Anyway, if money is not a factor here, the Sig comes highly recommended. I would personally go with the Glock 19. Less money, I think Glock makes fine products, lightweight, good carry capacity, accurate. Only thing I don't like about Glocks is their slide stop. Other than that, they are a great gun. I'd own one right now, but I'm trying to put some money away right now to buy some land.

I haven't really shot the Sig pistols except for two times that I rented a P220 at the range. I liked it, I have nothing against it. I just find the Glock more comfortable, and I shoot more accurately with it.

I would take these guys' advice though and go down to the gun range and rent each of these and see how you like them. I hold accuracy above most all else. A pistol is useless unless you can hit what you're aiming for.

That's toward the high end of what I've seen those. Usually they are closer to $350.

Does it come with two magazines? If so, $400 (out the door) is probably fair. If it only has one, I think he is maybe asking too much. But it's not outrageous either way.

If you are looking for a compact, consider a Taurus Millennium Pro PT111. I have one and I am very satisfied with it. I have owned a Ruger and have fired for qualification in the Navy, using a .45 The PT111 can be had for less than $350.

Dunno, never been much for a nine in anything except for M9's and the clones and slight variants. Me personally, I'd rather just stick to my .45 acp's. Better stopping power. But that's just me. If you get a chance, drive around to any and every gun shop you can get to and handle everything that you can get your hands on and see what you like best. If I had to pick a nine that I've handled I would say probably a PT-92 or PT-99. Basically an M9 clone with better ergonomics, but thats just my opinion.

since my last post i have further more narrowed my selection somewhat.. haha
ive crossed out the Smith and Wessons,
the only SIGS they had is the p226 and p229, i fell in love with them both, i like the p229 a bit more but i wouldnt beable to afford them the 225 and 226 i can get for around $350-400 used.

they also have the p226 available for rent at their gun range. i wasnt able to shoot it today though.

my question is what is the difference between the p225,p226,p228 and p229?
is there one that is alot better than the other?

i still havnt seen the p225 and p226 in person.

if you put them in order of which you think is the better SIG how would it go? also still considering glock 19..

The P225 and P228 are old (no longer in production) models, while the P226 and P229 are current models. As I understand it, the P226 is the replacement for the P225 and the P229 is the replacement for the P228.

Other than that, the difference is size. SIG's website is very helpful for comparison.

thanks for that site.
so i have decided i like the p229 best, but would not beable to afford one brand new. but i'm confused.. is there different types of p229? cause ive noticed my local gun shop wants $850 for a new one, seen some on the internet for over $1000, and some used for $800+ and some for $650 new..

here are some local p229 for sell.

this guy only wants $500 for a used p229?!?! that just seems like to good of a deal to be true? what do you guys think is a good deal for a used p229?
and what is the average cost for a new p229?

I am not a fan of the Sig or S&W's I have shot. Out of your list I would recommend the Glock- but I would not purchase without a good hard look at the Springfield XD.

My personal choice was the USP Compact 9mm.

EDIT: P.S. There is a lot of bait and switch with firearms, I speak from experience. Just because someone advertises a new gun at a good price, does not mean they actually have that gun in stock.

I will have to be very desperate to order from CDN after calling about an advertised USP, the salesman laughed and said he had not seen the advertised model in several years, but they had another USP... I cut him off, assured him it was in the newest catalog, and that I would be going elsewhere.

From what I can tell, SIG makes more of the P226 in 9mm and more of the P229 in .40. If you want a P226 in .40, you're going to pay a premium. Same if you want a P229 in 9mm. There are fewer available, so they demand a higher price.

SIG recently increased their MSRP to over $1000. If a dealer doesn't move a lot of stock, he likely still has his new ones priced at the old price (which is good for you). If you can get a good one for under $900 or a (good condition) used one for under $600, you're getting a good deal.
