I have a customer who is going to be reloading some .223 cal ammunition for competition bench rest shooting at 600 yards. Can you help me to give him some guidance with regards to which primer to use? He will be shooting in relatively cooler (40-65 degrees Fahrenheit) weather. His choice right now is CCI small magnum rifle primers, but he is open to better suggestions.

I shoot nothing but CCI primers, but I would say is to try a few others just to make sure it's the best one for that load.

CCI makes a match primer that I believe is just as hot as the small rifle mag primers, but is suppossed to be more consistent. Most of the guys here that use the 223 prone at 600 are shooting 69gr up to 80gr Sierra matchkings behind some amount of Hodgedon's Varget powder. Recipies will vary, but this is generally what I have seen. The 1 in 9 barrels may not stabalize the 80 gr matchkings very well.
Hope this helps Kirk |
