I can see someone saying that if they did not serve in the military.
But since I did, I know the fun of shooting an M16, even though I do not own an AR right now. |

Thanks for the compliment Beth! I want to write a book about my time in the Patrol when I retire. I think the best thing about this forum is we can express our excitement about what we are passionate about, firearms, the outdoors, and freedom.

I am going to have to go with the AR, I have shot both, and to me, They are both fun but here is where I favor the AR more, ITS MADE IN AMERICA, it is not 70% stamped steel, It is very accurate, and very reliable. I clean mine after every outing and havn't had a jam/FTF/FTE in the 1k rounds I have owned the rifle. I have fun, accuratly puting shots on target, and also have fun throwing 30 rounds downrange as quick as I can pull the trigger.
What I dont like about the AK, is that it has a "cheap" feeling when you hold it and when you shoot at it, in most cases I don't like the looks of them, stamped parts really turn me off of a gun. |

Having never owned an AR, but in that caliber only a Mini 14, have just one observation about a WASR's reliability. This is just my impression.
Although my Mini 14 had two misfeeds when I first tried out 40 rounds in the Ruger factory 20-rd. mag, it had no more misfeeds and had neither a 'ftf' nor any other malfunctions after I lubricated the magazine and the rifle. The 30-rd. polymer Promag never had a single misfeed, though loaded to 12 rounds or less (to conserve ammo). My only ammo consisted of 1,300 rounds of Wolf fmj and Silver Bear jhp. Watched a buddy shoot about 80-100 rds. from his common WASR AK clone. He had either a single ftf or fail to eject with this limited number of rounds. But the bad ergonomics are what really turned me off with AK clones. My SKS feels much better to handle (no rough/sharp metal edges), and the recoil is very mild. Never shot an AR nor an AK, but I was at the range one day with my 4" model 66, next range there were two young kids with an AK shooting at a pop can. They went through a mag each and the can was still there. I went over and sat down, used the bench and took the can down for them, first shot moved it a little, the second one sent it flying. They packed up and left right after that.
Anyway, as I understand it the AR is much more accurate but not as reliable as an AK. Is that true? Should I not buy an AK and save my money for an AR?

Full-auto AR15s are fun, especially with 22LR conversion units. A brick of Mini-Mags will provide a lot of cheap entertainment.
If you're talking semiauto-only, my vote goes to the AK. A very gutsy rifle..... and the AR15 gets a little annoying with that "boing" sound every time you fire a shot. |

The AR is very accurate but that is part of the problem, it is too easy.
The AK is not as accurate so it is a lot more fun to try to get it to do the job that the AR does easily. And another PLUS for the AK, most of them will bump fire. This is a way to fire the gun fast almost like full auto fire, and it is legal to do, but if you are at a range that has a range officer he will most likely get upset. It is a very inaccurate way to fire a gun because you start out holding the gun at the right hip, it is best to first attempt this at your local shooting spot not at a supervised range. With the ammo being so cheep this kind of fire can be a lot of fun to do. If you practice this method you can get good enough to do it from the shoulder. Here is a video of bump firing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DE9ST0IjdHo This is why the AK is much more fun to shoot than the AR! ![]() |

Dang... The polls closed. Ill chime in anyway... Id have to say the AK is more fun to shoot simply because i dont have to go chasing brass to reload. Its sorta like a .22 to me. Just shoot the hell out of it and leave the empties where they lie. Other than that. I love my ARs

I've shot them both and have to agree with some of the other posters that you like them for different reasons. Most AR's are kinda cheap and plastic-y and the AK feels more solid. However, for the most part I've found the AR to be more accurate at least from a consistency standpoint. And, it's like Barbie for men...

You can always fire the AK on full auto until the handguards burst into flames.....like this moron:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIO-Ct_VJvM The final comment is priceless... "Too hot" Yeah. No s**t, sherlock.

AK, Hands down. I have owned several various ARs and not a single one has proven itself to be as reliable or easy to use. The two best ARs I have ever owned where by Colt and RRA but even these experienced more malfunctions than my AK.
I love my AK, the ammo is cheap, its always accurate and it always goes BANG! when you tell it too. Its no precision rifle, but its accurate enough for most battlefield applications. Not to mention you can make one in your friggin basement, talk about simplicity! |

Every evening we counted the rounds fired and most didn't use the five 20 round magazines assigned. I forgot to mention the main question. How does the AK qualify compared to the Fal Last edited by WILD CAT; 04-17-2010 at 05:53 PM.. |

As for dependability, I dont think any weapon can replace the AK as being the most reliable weapon. So it really is a matter of application. If you are hoofing it through mud and muck I would go with an AK, but in an urban setting for example, an FAL or AR might be your best bet. Last edited by Merick The Red; 04-17-2010 at 11:37 PM.. |

Lets see... When I had my Colt AR-15 SP-1 I had a lot of fun with it.
Then, when I sold it and replaced it with the Colt CAR-15 version I had a lot of fun with it too. And, after selling that and replacing it with my Rommy AK variant... I have a lot fun with it!!! ![]() |
