It also might help the kick involved (though that's not a lot I admit). Now I would personally go with the 20" barrel - but then I'm really one of those people that like to reach out and touch someone. Might be why I keep trying to see how well I can shoot at 75 feet with my Beretta 9mm. Now if you were to ask me the length of barrel on my AK I would have to tell you I don't have a clue (not even too sure how to measure it). The guys here will give you much better reasoning for one length or another but there's my reasoning for what it is worth. NeoDebo V.I.P. Close the breech. Insert a cleaning rod into the muzzle until it rests on the face of the breech. Make a mark on the cleaning rod at the muzzle. Withdraw the rod and measure the distance. My excuse is that I had to get an answer from as many as possible by tomorrow morning to order the Russsian AK. I swear I have never done that before. You said..... " you are aware of the unburned powder flash from the short barrel....." Yep, and until you mentioned it I never realized that residue was unburnt and wasted powder. So it seems obvious now to me that the 20 inch is probably better for me. I already have a 16 inch but it is Chinese and I really want this Russian one. But will the 20 inch "bump shoot" as well as the 16 inch I wonder? Thanks for all the replies. Now my next question is where you getting the Russian AK? How much is it going to run you? And do they have more? I know, I know, I know...questions, questions, questions... Cheaper- than- Dirt is selling 1000 rounds now for $69.00. So I can plink all day for very very low cost. Or bump shoot for cheap too. Compare that to the cost of ammo for the Garand or even the highly over-rated AR-15. Besides that, I already have a 16" AK. I want a 20" for my collection. Just my opinion. NeoDebo V.I.P.
