Default To fish or hunt...

Welp.. We did fish! There was some gnarly weather that kind of made a mess of a few of my family members homes, so we are doin the Turkey feast tonight, as opposed to yesterday... So whats a guy 'sposed to do... Nobody on the rivers, or the woods... Fish, or hunt... Fishin it is! Which is weird I even decided to go, since all of the local rivers are near bank-full stage, and pumpin mud! But there is always this one little stream, no matter what, it'll fish 12 hrs after a storm! So I went out, braved the pounding rain, and mild temps. Weird weather right now! I was targeting Chinook, or King salmon, but the Chum's were in thicker than peanut butter! I tried to get some video, and set up a couple cameras on different tripods... Heres what turned out.

Carefully remove Kwikfish while keeping non-targeted fish in the water.

Mint(for Oregon) Chum Salmon.

Smile you stinky 'ol fish! Pretty neat how they get those "calico" stripes eh!
Pound for pound... the hardest fight'n Salmon in the world! Gotta love a a fish they call a Dog! Oncorhynchus Keta. The Chum Salmon.

This is true.
I still enjoy fighting, the real deal, un-convoluted by hatchery gene'd Steelhead on the Northern OR coastal rivers. Hands down the most rewarding fish there is on the planet! To me! Hahaha!
The Chums get no respect 'round here! Folks like to snag 'em in low clear water, but nobody really "fishes" for 'em when the waters up. So I like to give the good 'ol Keta, a thumbs up!

Fishing is great, you get to relax, have a few beers and if your lucky catch some dinner!

Having lived and fished in Alaska for many years, these knuckle draggin, lowdown, dirty snaggle toothed dog's were some of the hottest, bulldogenist hardrunningest' fish you wanted to hook!
I'm convinced though that the champion of pound for pound toughness belongs to the lowly Blue gill, and the toss up for the best eat'n, deep fried fillets is a between the Crappy and the Walleye.

I would give the nod to yellow perch as the best eating fish with the blue gill coming in second.

My favorite fishing is sauger and walleye, but I also love to catch the big flathead catfish too. I used to do a lot of musky fishing in my younger days.

The Federal Government in cahoots with the great State of Florida has, in its infinite wisdom, closed Grouper fishing from Nov. 30 to April 30 in the Gulf of Mexico and local waters to recreational fishing. Commercial fishermen may still take millions of pounds of Grouper but I can't keep 2 fish a day. How's that gonna help rebuild Grouper stock? Anyhow, we went out last week just because the weather was perfect for a trip offshore so we bought enough liquid gold from the nearby marina to get us there and back. Turns out, we had the best day fishing Grouper ever. Boated and released 7 keeper Gags, thirty or so Reds and uncountable Grunts. If the pix's come out, these two were a double caught at the same time by me and a friend.

I once faced that dilemma whether to fish or hunt,... I hunted fish with my shotgun, problem solved

All nice fish guys...

We routinely do the "blast and cast" here so it's the best of both worlds...a few teal and some flatties for the grill...

I would hate to have to make a choice between the two. I like both, but will have to admitt when it comes to putting food on the table, fishing is way to go. I can legally take way more fish in a year, than I can game. The problem with fish any more is that they have been polluted with mercury, and PCB's. Still, I like to fish, I just watch how much of it I eat!
