I'm just starting to get into IDPA with my 1911 and since I've been kicking around buying another handgun, I thought I might as well get something that will fit into the SSP or ESP class, probably in 9mm this time to save on ammo. I know they're great guns, but I just don't like the grip angle on a Glock, not to mention the fear of putting a hole in my foot. I've been eyeballing the XD9 and Ruger P series. Both feel pretty good in my hand.
Currently, the 1911 is my nightstand gun, glove box gun, carry gun, camp gun (if the old marlin 336 is too big to bring), and groundhog in the front yard gun. What I'm going for here is that I like the 1911 ergonomics and I'm darn used to them, so something similar would be good. What I'm looking for mostly here is something to get into the other classes and save me a bit on ammo at the range. Thanks all

I haven't heard any complaints about the XD-9, the Ruger feels "blocky" to me, and doesn't have the accuracy I look for. My choices would include the SIG 226, H&K USP or P-30 which are fine handguns for IDPA use. There are quite a few that would work well.
Ultimately, it's what fits YOU, that will get you the best score, not what someone else likes.

I personally use a glock 17 but since you have stated that you arent a fan of them. I've heard nothing but good reviews about the XD's. I've had minimal experice with the sig's. I used Sig 229 DAO for a while, the trigger set on that was a little strange to me, but honestly i never put enough time behind the gun on that. I would give the XD some good consideration, but all the guns listed there are fine choices.

Or have you searched for a 1911 chambered in 9mm? Seems like the logical choice to me since you seem to love the "fit" of a 1911...

Both Para & Springfield make a 1911 in 9mm.

I'm not real familiar with IDPA, but this seems like a fine gun..in 9mm (92).

For ESP a STI Trojan in 9MM is hard to beat if you like the 1911 design. For SSP you can stick with the 1911 controls and go for the Para Tac Five. Their LDA gun. I have shot the gun and it has the smoothest D/A trigger I have ever shot...period!
Getting away from the 1911's I would look at the CZ 75/85 series of pistols for either ESP or SSP in IDPA. To me the SIG 226 is a great gun but with a high bore axis and it is blocky. Take Care Bob |

Try the springfield, I have the XD9 - Ported (not allowed in IDPA) and love that gun. I have a buddy that uses a glock and I understand what you say about the grip angle. Since you are used to a 1911 the safety system on the springfield will not be a problem (grip and trigger). I also have a Kimber 1911 but I am also thinking of getting the Springfield in .45 also

Should have added the S&W M&P is developing quite a reputation for endurance, reliability and accuracy and a growing following in IDPA. Good for SSP and ESP.

I forgot all about this thread I started. I ended up buying a Ruger P95 because I snagged one used for an incredible deal. Then bought an M&P .40 because of the $50 rebate + two free mag. deal. On top of that, they were on sale at a local sporting good store, so I ended up paying about $380 for it. I like the Ruger, but my wife has commandeered it as her own. I'm ok with that, because I LOVE the M&P. I can shoot it almost as good as my Springer 1911 out to 50 feet easily.

I have a XD 9mm because I use a XD .45 for IDPA, if you shoot a 1911 in IDPA, try to find a very similar 9mm in a 1911 style |

You can't go wrong with a Smith M&P, I've got fellow shooters who swear by them.
Of course there is nothing wrong with the 1911 either, that's the only bottom feeder I shoot. But then again I'm a wheel gunner. My bride shoots a 5906 / 9mm Tactical and that is a fine firearm also, if you can find a nice one. |

Since you have the pistol and have the bug for competivive shooting, I strongly suggest you start reloading for practice and competition. Your cost for ammo should drop 45-60% for a box of 50. Initial out lay for say a Lee Classic and the dies for a 9mm will be a good bet. I shoot +/- 200-300 rds each week and the Lee Classic easily handles my shooting and monthly IDPA shoot. Good luch and go the next step of reloading.

Ok got a couple of questions. Would a XD9SC or a Glock26 be an acceptable choice for IDPA? I always here about peeps using full size pistols but have never heard of anyone using a subcompact? Any advice?
