You most certainly could buy a 9mm barrel and fit it to the gun but the slide will not eject the 9mm because the face of it is to big to grab the much smaller 9mm case. In other words you would have to change the slide as well, meaning it probably would be cheaper to buy a whole new gun.

To convert a 1911, you need an entire top. Slide, barrel, and recoil spring. New magazine. New slide stop. Also, the government model ejector won't work with 9mm, although the commander one will.
