Just woke up at 830am. All my friends ditched me last night. On Saturday of all nights. I think I'm going to move out of here soon. I want to move to Texas or Minnesota. Anybody from these places know any good areas that aren't too expensive to live in?

Cost of living here in central TX ( Dallas down to Austin ) isn't too bad and there's a few jobs to be had. All depends on how much heat you can take, if 98* is your idea of a great summer day, then pack it and send it south! They have some demographics available online and you can get a pretty good idea of the job market from those and some job searches.
I can't stand cold weather, so Wisconsin is a state that I couldn't tell ya about.

I don't mind the heat. My aunt and uncle used to live in Florida and they always told me the difference is that it gets really humid down there in the summer where up here in Wisconsin it isn't as bad.

humidity is pretty tolerable around here, the coast is a different story though.
Believe me, anything that starts with a 5 is cold in my book, so as soon as i see 59, 55 and such, my body doesn't like it. anything in the 40's is downright frigid! So if the temps start dipping below 60 by sept and don't warm up til May, that's not much of the year that I'll enjoy. ![]() You share a b-day with my daughter, I'm really dreading the next one..... I'll have a teenager on my hands, Yikes! ![]()

If you don't like cold weather or taxes then don't move to MN.
Coldest temperature I have seen here is -39F, I don't want to see it again. Granted, that was the coldest during my entire lifetime, and it may never happen again. Taxes are disgusting here though (and I think that's pretty permanent.)

All over East TX there are small towns where the cost of living is not high at all. Remember that TX covers a lot of country, so the same could be said for most of TX. The big cities will cost you to live in, but then again, that's where the higher wages are paid. I live in East TX, way out in the country. I have two sons that live in the Ft Worth area, so I have a good idea of what the cost of living is in both places.

The oil field stuff is really going strong in northern Montana and North Dakota. A new pipeline is being built from Canada down to some southern refinery and they expect work to last 2-3 years on just that. There is a big coal mine almost under way about 140mi. from us that will be huge and they will need folks. Go to the state websites and see whats out there. What do you do? This isn't a bad place and probably similar weather to yours. And best of all, no b.s. gun rules!

But it's not much worse in the winter than Minnesoda or Wisconsin...just not as many trees to break the wind from howling through. ![]() As wyoredot posted, the oil boom out west river ND is still pretty good. Lots of power plant jobs available or upcoming soon as some of the original workers are getting real close to retirement age. Quite a few wind power jobs out there statewide too (either construction or operations) since that's currently a hot topic here now too. Hey...we might as well do something with all this wind! LOL Some manufacturing jobs too...but those do fluctuate with the national economy just like everywhere else too. All depends on what your skill set is and what you're willing to do. Both ND and SD are a bunch cheaper in taxes than MN. Most of the place, housing is still fairly reasonable when factored to the wages. The wage prices look kinda low when you compare em to nationwide...but cost of living is lower too so it balances out pretty decent I think. North Dakota's Job Service website... http://www.jobsnd.com/ South Dakota's Dept of Labor... http://dol.sd.gov/ These will give you an idea of what's available for jobs out here on the prairie. I can't help ya with tips on Texas...it's too hot down there for me! ![]() |

Texas is a right to work state and thus, not very union. We have an oil boom happening right now in South Texas, called the Eagle Ford Shale. The pipeline infrastructure just isn't there for the volume. If you can pass the X-ray test, you can get hired on.If you have a mobile rig, you can name your price. I think most are working 7 on, 7 off, 24 hour call.
Cost of living is cheap, but the culture shock might get to you.

Be careful here, with that background. The O is trying his best to shut down Texas, including layoffs at NASA. SouthWest Airlines is in Dallas,I think.

Southwest just took a big gamble on the new Airport in Florida http://iflybeaches.com passenger Traffic has already exceeded the intial estimates. The DOD has already commited/funded almost 1700 F-35 aircraft, all to be build at the Lockheed Factory in Ft Worth. I see alot of assembly line type jobs on thier web site and heard that Ft Worth and Oklahoma City were the only cities that did not feel the recession in the USA. If yer planning to move from Minn to TX, just be sure to get a car, and house with a good A/C. You will need it! The humidity is worse than anything, so on those 98* days and the humidity hovering at 70-85% just a few minutes outside and ya will feel like a sopping wet dishrag. Without A/C, it is IMPOSSIBLE to cool off in this climate until about november. Ya NEVER get used to the heat and humidity so don't let anyone kid ya about that. I lived here in se texas all my 59 years and the summers are just as brutal now as they were when I was a wee little lad. If ya travel anywhere in the summer in texas, be sure to take a cooler with plenty of cool water. One breakdown on the superhot highways and you will be in plenty of trouble without water. We have four full season here... Almost summer, Summer, Still summer, and 30 days of awful warm weather. Good luck on yer move and welcome to the Republic of Texas.

I've seen maybe a handful of days that cold in my 38 years here in ND. If Pinecone is in upper MN she might have a few more of them up there -10 to -15 is a bit more common...but again you don't get many days of that per winter either...but your car/truck sure lets ya know when it happens. Perfect ice fishing weather!I've got my own little policy on vehicles for up here. If they won't start at -15 without being plugged in they don't stay with me very long. All this talk of nice cold weather while we've got this nasty summer heat & humidity is making me itchy for snowmobile season.... |
