Default Springfield XD40, thoughts?

A friend of mine just told me about a gun he is selling. it is a Springfield XD sub compact in .40 S&W. it is the OD green on black color. It comes complete with the extended and standard mag, all paperwork, and all the stuff it originally came with. He wants $325 for it, sound like a good deal? what are your thoughts about the gun in general? thanks, im really interested in it for carry since its getting harder to hide the full size 1911.

I sure hope vegastech is not lurking around here somewhere....

I don't know about the subcompact but the full size and their medium size pistols are pretty good and reliable. I'm not a big fan of the XD trigger but reliability is pretty good. However...i don't like the 40sw caliber. 9 is good, 45 is much MUCH better. I have heard about core jacket seperations on the 40.....

Have one, shot it in competion and for my handgun class. Love it, had only one ftf, which was my fault. This one loves all kinds of ammo, and I just put on one of the recoil spring lasers so I don't need a different holster. The trigger is easy to overcome after a few hundred rounds. I had a p95 D.A.O Ruger before this Springer and this one works for me.

DUDE! Buy that mofo! You friend is selling it a full 200 bucks cheaper than they go for at the shop. You will like the XDs, And dont sweat the core jacket separations, that just depends on bullet design and quality. Here, ill show you a picture, these are 230 grain gloden sabers (golden sabers are top o' the line hollowpoints for personal defense) shot from my .460 rowland at 1300 fps. ALL of them separated from the jacket but the core ended up in a nice flat wad about .750" in diameter and retained about 65% of their original weight, not in any way a bullet failure IMO

The SD subcompact is a little snappy but a great pistol. I have the subcompact and full size both in 40. They will shoot any 40 bullet I put in them and are extremely reliable. At 325 I would have already picked it up.

thats kinda the answer I was expecting. Im still waiting for a call back from the guy before I go pick it up, cant wait. As for bullet sep, im not a big fan of 9mm so the .40 is as small as im willing to go. I still love my .45, its just a little big to be hiding in gym cloths or something like that during the summer.

I would really like to get the xdm, but i figure at this price i cant say no.

so what is the problem with the trigger? just a different feel?

I'll throw my .02 in also. I have owned an XD and an XDM and did not like either one. With that being said, if I could buy one at that price, I would still jump on it.

I didn't like much of anything about them. The trigger was horrible and both of them just didn't feel good in my hand. I can't really explain that but they just didn't.

Buy it! You can flip it and make some cash. Then take the cash and buy a Smith M&P 40C, you will be better off in the end.

You need to jump on that deal, or I WILL!! The XD is an awesome concealed carry gun and even more awesome a shooter.

Some Glock fan in here knocked the trigger but honestly as striker fired poly guns go it's one of the smoothest triggers in my opinion.
Their magazines are awesome also compared to the M&P's and the Glocks.

I looked at both guns new at my local gun shop, bought the XD because it was a bit less expensive. After 10 minutes at the range, I regretted spending the money! I just couldn’t get comfortable with it; the trigger pull seemed to be stiff and hard, and not consistent at all. More over I just couldn’t get comfortable with it. I took it back and traded it for the M&P, and don’t regret that decision a bit. It just fits better, and since it fits better, it’s a better shooter.

I now own three M&P’s and am more than please with every one of them. At the end of the day it all comes down to personal preference. You could buy (for the price you cant go wrong) it and love it, only you will know.

Why don't you just get a 1911 with a shorter barrel length?

I didn't like the way it felt in my hand either.

navis128, I would love to get a small 1911, my friend just got a sweet springfield compact. It is awesome and fairly light. but I want something a little smaller and lighter. Not to mention that his mini 1911 was well over $1300, thats about $1000 more than I have

I have 4 XD's and a couple Glocks. I prefer the XD's ergo's to that of the Glock (haven't handled a gen 4). If you like the ergo of a 1911 you'll probably prefer the XD. The grip angle and overall design was meant to mimic the 1911 & Hi-Power as much as possible. I have one of the initial release XD9 and after 12k rounds it's never given me one issue.

Plus if you don't like it there are quite a few posters in the thread that would take it off your hands.

Someone in here mentioned the Smith M&P 40sw. That was what won our t/e for our department shoot off to see which firearm we were going to, it got down to the XD, the G22 and the M&P all 40sw caliber. The smith won because of the ability to change out backstrap grips completely which dealth with our issue of smaller handed and larger handed individuals not to mention their customer service with L.E. is second to none and ofcourse the life time guarantee did not hurt. The price of all three were all in the same range lower $400 to $470 price range but the only reason the XD did not win because though everyone loved to shoot it the best of the three the three models they brought had feeding issue's which possibly could have been the magazines. The Springfield guy messed up by bringing unreliable guns to a L.E. Department test and eval, moron. The fact that all the instructors myself included owned XD's in one form or another shows the confidence we have in their products, even more so with their newer enhanced models and thier tactical 45acp is the bees knees of firearms the thing is a true gem both to shoot and awesome ergonomics regardless of size the frames on the XDls have a portly muzzle atleast the standard sizes but the slides set further back on your wrist joint so felt recoil in my opinion is less than the Glocks and equal to the M&P which has the same feature and awesome ergonomics as well. Though the Glock standard trigger is lighter by a pound than either the M&P or the XD in my opinion there is a smoother feel on the finger pad as you squeeze it. IMHO get the XD if you can for the price he claimed.

k75rt, you could google ANY gun and get negative reviews. Good example is the high point. Some people SWEAR by them and others wouldnt own one if you gave it to them. I would ask to shoot the gun before doing the purchase and draw your own conclusion..........

I own an XDSC in 9mm and it's been absolutely reliable. It's accurate and easy to conceal. I am sure you'll be a happy camper when and if you get it.
