remington Model 12 - The Firearms Forum

hey im back with my model 12 (I think) how do i tell if its a model 12a c or b or even a model 121? im missing the bolt so i dont know what firing pin it had in it. my SN# is 256126 and has RW stamped above that. not to sure but on the bottom of the barrel it has what looks to be CS2 then around the barrel a bit more it has an S stamped in it.

I'm no Remington expert, but looking at the book here:
The model 12A is chambered for .22 short, long and lr.
The model 12B is chambered for .22 short only and was made only with
the octagon barrel.
The Model 12C is similar to the 12A, except 24" octagon barrel.
The Model 12CS is chambered for .22WMF cal.

Also, the 12A was mfg. from 1909-1936, and with the RW stamped
on the barrel, that would be Nov., 1928.
If I'm wrong. I hope to be corrected on this by one of the Remington guys.

i cant get my camera to focus on the writing or the numbers it just comes out as a blur. the RW is stamped on the bottom of the upper reciever and the serial number is right below that. the barrel is round and has .22 short, long or long rifle stamped on it.
thanks for all the responses i really need some help with this as i want to make it a complete gun again.

i guess i forgot to add that this gun was given to me by a friend who found it stashed in his attic or wall or something, and only about 80percent of it is here, the stock has been hacked off and even that is broken. ill try and get a pic of tonight its all tore apart right now.

The model 12C also has a cresant steel butt plate.

just wondering if you could elaborate on the RW a bit more, how does that tell you what month and year. thanks for all the info

W was 1928 and also 1972, but since the 12 wasn't still being made in '72, it had to be '28.

On the Remingtons, date codes were stamped on the left top side of the barrels just forward of the reciever. And as Alpo posted the link, that will
tell you what the letter's meanings are. (dates of mfg.)
If the (gun) was ever sent back for modifications, there will be other
marks forward of that, telling the date of modification (s).

actually the serial numbers are on the bottom of the upper reciever, not the barrel on this gun. also does anyone have a breakdown or feild manual for this gun, i have the numerich break down but just wondering if anyone had the field manual for it. i would really like a copy.

Click on owner's manuals. They have it listed as a Model 12 shotgun, but it's the 22 rifle. Requires adobe, but heck, everbody's got adobe nowadays, right?

holy smokes that website is awesome. thanks a ton alpo thats exactly what i was lookin for. im definatley gonna bookmark that one.

im goin home this weekend so i can look at the carrier i bought on ebay and see if its going to work or not then i can call my gun parts guy in washington and order the rest of the stuff i need. my dad told me when get it all put together since im goin to be using a different bolt than the one it was built with, i should take it to a gun smith and have the head space checked. is he right or just being a little over protective?

I see a couple of possibilities with a rimfire cartridge.

If the headspace is excessive, it won't fire. No danger, but you're sitting there cussin', "Why don't my verdammt gun work?"

If, however, headspace is short, and you pump strongly, I suppose it is possible for the act of closing the bolt to cause the gun to fire.

All in all, it wouldn't hurt to check it.

Also, notice the warning on that site. If you download more than Steve thinks you should, he'll block you. I go there all the time. It is a great site.

yea it is a great site, but that is the only gun i seen that i needed the book for.

got the carrier putin and it looks like it is going to work now i just need a stock and the rest of the guts im missing. gonna call the guy in washington tommorrow, hopefully he has all i need.
