well when i was at the gunshow i figured i'd pick up a few stripper clips. i bought a bag of 20. and when i get home ended up some of them would fit in the guide thats made onto the bolt carrier, and some wont. they are too wide to fit down into the slot. just a smidge but still too wide. i have 3 clips that are old that i got from a friend, and they are loose in the slot. so i guess i'll just have to toss these clips since they dont work? i thought about opening up the slot just a tad with my dremel. but i dont want to make it too wide and then the clips might bind up in there.
any thoughts ~John

My solution was a couple of these. They are twenty round magazines made by TAPCO and they work like a charm. The only thing you have to do is remove the internal magazine and you're good to go. They cost about $20.00 each and are well worth it. You can find them at several internet accessory sites like Cabelas (where I got mine). Just make sure you get TAPCO. If I had a 300 dollar rifle and a 50 cent clip, and the clip did not fit the rifle correctly, requiring modification, I believe I would modify my 50 cent clip, instead of my 300 dollar rifle.
But that's just me.

ROMT.
if you dont mind sending them id love to have some more, a tad over half of the ones i have work fine. i really like using them instead of the detachable magazines. i just like the standard 10 round magazine for some reason. alpo i considered modifying my rifle, but with the same thought prossess you had i didnt figure it was a wise decision. what i found out that i could do is to take the clip and put it in the slot, because all of them will fit but real snug, and wiggle it side to side and it basically bends the side of the clip a tad and gives it enough clearance. out of a bag of 20 about half were loose enough that i could bend them this way and get them to work fine. the others where really really snug and dont wanna bend |

I'm with RunningOnMT, Tapco magazines work very well... stripper clips, not so much (at least for me)

I have 100 Russian made stippers, they work just fine.
If you dont know how they work, dont blame the machine. I can reload the SKS faster than folks can stuff duckbill mags in them, AKs for that matter also, My 5ft asian wife does it with 2 fingers, just the way I showed her. |

personally i like sks rifles and hope to get a good russian example one day, when money permits. one i have is a plain jane, she has all matching part numbers except the extractor that i had to replace. she has a nice golden patina on the stock and some well worn finish on the metal, only thing i have done is added a touch of orange sight paint to the front sight and a drop of white on each side of the rear

thank you to those folks that sent me sks stripper clips. i am using them currently. i had bought some at a gunshow and it ends up they do not hold the rounds securely enough so i am very thankful for the freebies thus far.

I can honestly say I only used stripper clips one time on my SKS when I was out shooting and a friend had some. One time and it just didnt feel right and I never ventured any further with them again.

i like stripper clips for several reasons. one reason is that i dont want to convert my gun from stock condition. but the main reason is the nostalgia. i can just imagine trying to load under fire. it would be hard unless practiced and then not preferable. but i dont ever plan on having to use my sks in combat.

But I did have the 30rnd clip and used it often, and as it stands up today, I have the original 10 rnd in it.

I also use the striper clips on some of my SKS's, and some are converted to large cap. mags. If I had a bad striper clip, I would throw it away, and buy some more from a different manufactuor.

A large number of stripper clips sold for the SKS are really for the 7.62 NATO round. They will not fit the guide and will hold a larger base diameter cartridge.
If you get any that don't fit, send them back or trade them. I got 40 from a reputable source that were mislabeled. |

i have about 40 clips im planning to sell or trade to the gunsmith. they dont hold the shells quite as securely as i would like. the ones that dont hold right are cheap chinese stamped, while the ones that work well are stamped with a number and have a parkerizing type finish.
