Have three Ithaca model 37's.
One 20 gauge made in 1947 that I got from my dad and he got from his dad. One 12 gauge featherweight that I also got from my dad who bought it new. One 16 gauge that I picked up recently at a pawn shop. Wouldn't trade any of the three for any other pumpgun on the market today, but am now in the market for a new shotgun as it would be nice to atleast handle 3" shells if not 3.5" for waterfowl. |

I have a Browning BPS 12 ga and two Remington 870's (20 gauge and a .410). None of my shotguns are cream of the crop but then again all three see extensive hunting work and are perfect for that purpose.

I have a Winchester Defender that was marketed for a guard gun.
They came 2 in a box, and had a 26" cylinder bore barrel. I got it for $150.00 new and it is about a plain as they come. I had the barrel cut down to 19" and the muzzle threaded for Remington choke tubes. The smith welded a block under the bead on the end of the barrel and told me it will shoot low, try it and file the block down until it patterns correct for me. I did as he suggested and that gun shoots perfect for me. Seems I dont have to aim it, just point it and it connects. I use it in plate shoots, sporting clays, and for hunting before I quit. Best $150.00 I ever spent. I've had Remingtons, Stevens, Ithicas, Mossbergs, and Hi Standards pump guns, and found the 1300 works best for me.

I've been wanting a good 12g for home defence. A few weeks ago at the gun show, I picked up a Win 1200 for $140. It was pre-chopped to just a hair under 19". Just want I wanted. A pack of '00 buck and I'm set.

Moss 500.............gravel or not its a shotgun.
Just to spray BB's at a bird, stray dog, intruder or whatever the case they all just about do the same job............spray BB's. It works everytime I use it............period. I am not going to spend over $180 for a shotgun......I never have and never will. I have taken many fowl and it still does the job. Who cares anyway........well.......the guy with the most money into a shotgun is going to care only because he doesn't want to hurt his pretty gun with water and scratches. ![]()

Guys, figger it out. The Ithaca 37 is still being built, as the 97. Wonder why? Could it be, that because they load and eject thru the same hole, there's one less to collect dirt?how 'bout, the emptys are between your feet, whether you shoot left or right?
Maybe it's 'cause they just work? Less holes for the dirt to get in. Less parts to fail. Simple really IS BETTER! I own a half dozen of these machines, all, at this point, at 181/2" barrel, with no plug, and serious as death, reliable. I'm not a paranoiac, but against the possibility of a problem, at home, at the job, in transit, etc, they are all strategically located. Tell me about a shotgun that works better!

I own several Mod 12's, a 42, a smattering of A5's or Rem Copies. What goes in the field with me is a Benelli Super 90 in matte black and plastic furniture - it works for skeet to turkeys no complaints. (Unless I'm feeling "old timey" then I carry a Fox I recently purchased.)
Stash is dead on on the 37 though - he even left out another convincing argument he dropped on me once - the 37 is ambidexterous as well as reliable - another plus... |

Hydra Shok; You and I have the same shotgun. Mine came with the smoothbore, later added a vent-rib barrel from a 500 to my collection I use for Turkey. Nicknamed mine "ugmo". The friggin thing isn't much to look at but is dependable, makes a great foul weather gun.

Hey dan, welcome to TFF. Before I got my Maverick, I always borrowed my fathers Remington 1100 that I bet has only been shot about 10 times since it was bought in 1972. I "hated" to use it since it was in perfect condition, and I sure didn't want to skin it up. Guys at the camp would use their shotguns to push tree branches or bushes out of the way when walking thru a brushy area, I would hold my dad's behind me and take the tree branch slaps to the face when walking behind them. Synthetic is the way to go for me for a shotgun.

Who stirred this sh*t up? As I have said before, there is but ONE serious, social, shotgun; It is the Ithaca37, in whatever rendition. It is ambidexterous, as it puts the emptys straight down, it is, by at least, my standards, flawless in function, and it is cheap, if one buys it (barely, usually), used.
Notwithstanding that my present avocation is wearing out motorcycle tires, I will gladly meet any, and all, at whatever venue, and bring a couple of examples, to demonstrate this point. I don't deny that there are a bunch of great shotguns in the marketplace, but humbly submit, that when the sh*t gets deep, great is not BEST, nor even close, to good enough. Hope this helps, Terry

I left my Remington left-handed 870 Express with alaflyguy when I moved to Mississippi. No one else makes a left-handed model that I know of.
If I were to get another pump, I believe that I would opt for a Browning BPS with 28" barrel. Being left handed and it having bottom ejection, I think it'd fit my bill best. I'd like slightly better quality than the Remington express.

SG- Where'd ya get the folder for the S&W? Is it the issued folder or is it aftermarket? I heard those were good shotguns but I never cared for the cheesy stocks that normally come with them. Maybe I might need to pick one up now

The only shotgun I own is my Dad's old Winchester model 12 in 20 ga. I still have the leather covered hard case for it, and the original cleaning rod and mop. Mfg'd in 1948. It's in great shape, but hardly fired any more.

I've got a Revalation 310A(same thing as the Mossberg 500) and wouldn't trade it for the world. It's rigged up with a 30" barrel and a full choke and will reach out and touch a duck, rabbit, or whatever else you put in front of it. It's big and no fun to carry on a long hike through buckshot mud, but well worth it when you get there.

I don't like pump shot guns at all, I prefer semi-auto. My favorite is the Remington 1100 12ga. in synthetic.

I use my LH 1187 much more often, Remy.
I also agree that the 1100 is a superb gun. However, I was unable to get one LH years ago. My shotgun that was stolen with the rest of the collection years ago was an 1100 28" rib that had been modified to removable chokes. I know whence you're coming.....

The new 1187 Premiere in 12 ga, LH, seems to cycle just a little more than a tad slower that the older 1100 did. Often it drives me crazy because of that.....
There are times when I wish I did have a good pump action since it would be faster than the semi, on doves, for starters. That's why I'd like to have the Browning BPS with the bottom ejection. Makes a fine gun for a southpaw.
