Thanks for the tip and the links, both here and by PM. Price is right but not when one doesn't have the capital.....
I favor good wood, however. Also, I think SoMo and I have about maxed out our firearms budget for the time being, along with several other related hunting items..... Besides, SoMo is next up on the list and has to try to determine if she might like shooting clays and we need to find her just the right youth model shotgun for her short arms.

My favorite is a Ithaca Model 37 Featherlight Deerslayer I got 30 years ago. 16 GA. 26" smooth bore slug barrel with rifled sights.
Also have a Rem 870 for shooting 3 gun matches. ISB

I have both a brand-new Remington 870 Wingmaster Police of 1958' vintage AND a Mossy 500A Persuader; between the two of them, I am utterly satisfied! BTW, my Mossy grows smoother at each outing, and the Remington will no doubt soon follow the same route. Actually, the M500A -as it is!- kind of does the pumping almost by itself. It's THAT smooth!
Regards,

Benelli all the way...
Might buy a Saiga for fun.. but only want Benelli shotguns for hunting. I have shot plenty of brands and models, there's just one that always beats the rest. I have been a hunter for 12 years. I have been sportshooting for 15 years. I have been repairing shotguns and rifles in Nuuk, Greenland, for 5 years - always testfired every weapon. I know what I want and why.

I'm gonna jump in here and add my opinion to the Ithaca crowd.
I own a model 37 (Deerslayer) featherlight 12ga with smooth bore slug 20" barrel and rifle sights. This shotgun does it all for me, home defense, clays, etc. It is a left handers dream with the bottom eject......... ![]()

My pump gun is a Mod. 870 Rem. with 30" full choke barrel, vent rib and factory installed recoil pad. 2 3/4" chamber. Been shooting it for 25 years and it is smooth as silk! It has downed doves, quail, pheasants, ducks, and geese. Bought it "used"..had less than a box of shells through it, gave $140 for it, along with a soft case and 7 1/2 boxes of shells. He was wanting $150, but all I had on me was $144...and I hadn't had lunch yet! LOL
I guess if I HAD to buy another one, I would give the Benelli a look, but would have to lean towards another 870. I'm not talking about the 870 Express...but the slick one...Wingmaster. I have shot Ithaca Mod. 37's, and it was nice, but a bit lighter than mine, and recoil was a little heavier. My father had a BPS, but got rid of it as it was extremely rough. He borrowed my 870 and ended up buying a twin to mine. John

I sure like my Ithaca 37's. Whenever I see a cheap, plain barrel, 12 Ga, I buy it. Corn-cobs, press checkered, blued, or parked, they always seem to work.
Funny; I used nothing but a M-12 Winchester 'til the army caught me, met the M10 (Army Ithaca), and fell in love. I see them for $175-200 US, at many gunshows, and buy them, $150, or less. If I wanted a cheap, and ultimately reliable shotgun, this is where I would look. The M-12's are wonderful pieces of work, but seldom cheap. The Benelli's, NEVER cheap. With shotguns at the ranch, the house, the truck, and the shop, they all need to work the same, feel the same, and be cheap! Yes, I own a lot of shotguns; my second favorite weapon, to a real answer, which will always be the rifle!

Had a Mossberg 500.didn't have a problem with it,but then this guy came along needin' money and had a LNIB Wingmaster Magnum that I couldn't live without so the Mossy said "Bye Bye".The Wingmaster was great for ducks and such(which we don't have much of here),but not worth a darn for doves w/the 30" full choke.Ended up tradin' it for about $500 worth of .22 rifles.
Now I have a Mossberg 835 that I haven't even used yet and I picked up an old Stevens mod 77 16ga. a while back that needs some work on the shell stop.Nice clean old shooter and smooth as silk.(Now if I could just find the parts I need to make it work.)Also have an old Model 12 .12 gauge that has the same problem, but I've retired it so I'm not too worried about it. I will have an Ithaca 37 some day,but not until I get a few more pressing "Needs" out of the way. BW |

All of my slide-action shotguns are Winchesters... a Model 1912 20 gauge, several Model 12 12 gauge guns, and several Model 1897s.

Benelli Nova. The only thing I don't like about it is when I was looking for a short barrel replacement so I can use it for home defense, the barrel cost just as much as a a brand new gun. No complaints at all.

I shuffled my collection around to dispose of a Rem 870 which I had left in my trunk; it had developed oxidation spots. So, right now all I have is a Brolin Arms riot gun, which is a fairly decent knock-off of the well respected Ithaca 37. In fact, I think the Ithaca 37 should be on any list of this kind.
Having said that, my personal belief is that for about $350 or less, you just can't beat the Remington 870 magnum pump riot gun for defense. It is reliable, robust, and has plenty of available serious accessories. At the next level, there is the Benelli line of pumps. When you talk semi-auto, which is what I'd prefer to have in the riot gun role nowadays, I'd look at a Remington 1187 riot gun, or a Benelli, if I had $500-700 to spend. There are other more esoteric choices at all price points, I think. Lately, I have been spending my gun money on other pursuits, but a new riot gun is high on my list and I hope it will be a semi-auto; if not, a modern pump of a well-respected brand. It will probably have a pistol grip -- at the rear, at least (with or without shoulder stock). We shall see.

I was "shotgunless" for many years up until a couple ago when I was in a local gunshow and saw what I thought was an 870 hanging off a guys' shoulder with a for sale sign on it. Turns out is was an 870 but the "Special Field" varient in very nice condition. Got it for $200.00 and it came with the three changeble choke tubes. Best shotgun I have ever had!

I decided to do some "safe cleanin'" a while back. The Model 12 and the Stevens 77 are no longer collecting dust.(Not in my safe anyway.)So, the Ulti-Mag is the only pump I've got left.Still lookin' for a "37" though.

1. J.C. Higgins mod 20 pump....12 gauge
2. Winchester mod 11 Semi auto......12 gauge........Nicknamed the "Widowmaker" because the barrell had to be depressed into the action to chamber the first rd. When the bolt sides home, it slides fast 3. Western Field pump.......12 gauge..........The Western Field was sold by Monkey Wards and was made by Browning 4. J.C. Higgins mod 36 auto.....12 gauge 5.& 6. J.C. Higgins....2...... bolt action........12 gauge & 16 gauge 7.& 8. Sears....2.....SxS.......20 & 12 gauge 9. J.C. Higgins mod 20 shortened for the local SO here years ago. The JC Higgins brand was sold by Sears in the 50's and 60's. The pump guns were said to have been made by High Standard. The mod. 20 was a copy of High Standard's mod 200. I think there are more but I'd have to go to the garage and open the safe an' I'm going to bed. Guess I got carried away, sorry. G'nite!
