Default smaller than a 3006

I have deer hunted with my 3006 since 2007 and hunted with my uncles since 2005. I have been thinking about getting my something smaller I don't know which to go with I have thinking about a 308 or a 25-06 but I don't know.

I would go with a .308 Win. It has 30-06 performance and ammo is plentiful in a lot of different flavors. If you reload the 25-06 would be good but I would prefer the .270 Win over it. I reload and would still opt for the .308

Just be sure whatever you decide on that it is your decision and not some one elses.

Not sure if your looking for distance or knock down power, but out at 300yds., the 30-06 Springfield, 180gr has a MPBR of 291yds., the .270 Win - 130gr, MPBR=299yds. and the .243 WIN., 80gr, MPBR= 302yds. So it really depends on if your looking for the "range" or the "knock-down" power?

If your thinking of a .243, you can shoot the 100gr bullets and they do have the stopping capability with a well placed shot, and the recoil is minimal.

One of the things I like about the .06 is the fact that you can shoot bullets from 55grains all the way up to 220grains.

id go with a 308. its more versatile with the loads you can pick and heavy enough to take a bigger dear down. id never use a 243 here in michigan.

If you are only going to use it for deer, I would go with the .243 or .25-06. There is just no need for anything bigger unless you want to go for bigger game.

I have used a .243 for deer for my whole life and have no intention of changing. I love it, and it has always doe the job quickly and efficiently. I was 10 when I killed my first deer with it, and it never took a step. Many more have been taken with it since.

All of the others are good rounds, and will do the job equally as well. It really comes down to personal preference. I just like to use a smaller caliber, as it is less abusive to both the shoulder and the wallet. I will listen to the conversation when people say a .223 or .22-250 (may not agree though) is too small for deer, but when that is said about the .243 it is simply incorrect. It is more than enough gun for any deer in America.

Why not a .280 , I know they are not so popular anywhere but it IS smaller with less recoil than a 30-06! I am not crazy about the edge , to me its just cheap , although it does go BANG!! thats all thats needed really.Since you sugested the edge $$ seems to be a factor so why not consider a win model 94 in 30-30 or 32spl (sweet old guns...my brother has one in .32spl has killed a TON of deer) or something to that effect.

There is a world of opportunity out there for selections in todays market for guns. Consider reading some reviews and doing other research. Maybe this time you may want to consider other factors like a recoil pad or plastic stock.
Remington has some interesting offerings now...

How do you feel about lever action? The Marlin 1894SS shoots .44 Mag. handgun ammo and is incredibly accurate within about a hundred and twenty yards. Most deer are taken at less than that, and the .44 magnum will take down a black bear. For that matter, I'd bet that the .357 magnum version of the 1894 would do fine for white-tails at a hundred yards or less.

I ain't big on marlins I like the wincester. 94 but I had a bad one when I got my first gun the barrel was mess up really bad so I traded it on my 3006. so that makes me leary of them. But I like bolt action more. I think if I get a. Rifle I will get the 7mm 08 and have shot one before.

Yeah I hear ya a model 94 is a good bush gun though. As for cal. I think a .308 will do (7mm-08 is a good round I just prefer the ole 308)...... if you want even less recoil a .243 win is the ticket (I used to own one in rem. model 7. By far the most accurate gun I ever owned , it was bought from a gunsmith and he had switched out the trigger , bedded it ect. , stupid "young me" I sold it. Worst sale EVER!! Still kicking myself)Hope I helpped , even a bit!!

If you havent done so yet, go to your gun shop/store and have a look at them and feel them out. Be sure to look at the magazine close, as I wasnt very impressed at the quality at all. I will say, a good price for the 3 bills your going to pay. I as of yet, havent heard/seen any reviews on what sort of min. of angle they produce beyond 100yds.

I've shot the .308 for years and the 7mm-08 for 4 years and inside 200 yards I see virtually no difference in performance except the 7mm-08 has less recoil than the .308 although it's not a harsh recoil either. In my 7mm-08 I use Hornady 139 gr. soft point Interlocks over 40.5 grains of IMR 4895 versus a 150 gr, Hornsdy SP Interlock in my .308 with 43 grains of IMR 4895. Both have performed well on the deer I have shot (normally 20 to 100 yard shots & ocaisonally to 150 yards)......you won't go wrong with either choice.

Another option to consider (as noted above) is to do what one of my hunting partners did. He down loaded his remington 760 in 30-06 to 2590 fps with a 150 hr. Sierra Pro Hunter under 44.5 grains of Varget. This has greatly reduced the weapons recoil but delivers .300 Savage performance which is more than adaquate for deer to 250 yards.

Just some food for thought to help you weigh your options and make the choice that is best for you. Good luck.

The 260 Remington is a great cartridge, if you reload. Otherwise the ammo is kind of scarce and on the expensive side. Works great of deer size game.
