Default suppressors

In the past couple of years I have noticed that on the various firearms forums individuals are talking aboutusing suppressors on thier rifles and in some cases pistols. Have federal lasw changed? I thought that the ATF frowned on anything that reduced the sound level of a firearm. Do some states allow the use of suppressors?

Most states allow silencers. They are completely regulated by the US government. You have to get permission to own one, both from the Feds and from your local "Chief Law Enforcement Officer". And you have to pay a 200 dollar tax on each and every one you own. But you can own them in MOST places.

Many people on the forums are not in the US (it is the WORLD-wide web, after all), and in just about every other country in the world silencers are not only legal, but the mark of a polite shooter, Just like you wouldn't run your lawn mower without a muffler, or drive your car without a muffler, you don't shoot your gun without a muffler. Shooting an unmuffled gun annoys the neighbors and scares the animals.

Do you have sources for this information?

One tiny little problem with that plan.

The way you get rich selling machine guns is by selling them to normal people. People like us that pay 10 to 20 thousand dollars for one. You do not get rich by selling them to the police, who pay, maybe, 1500 for one.

And if you convert semi auto rifles into machine guns, to sell to the general public, they put you in federal prison for ten years. For each gun. Us - the general public - cannot own a machine gun that has been made since May of 1986.

I like the New Zealand law's and attitudes on suppressor's there they are "Required" before 10 am Sunday morning and are thought of as being "polite , public minded" shooters when you pop a few bunnies without disturbing the neighbours ...

now for a nation that has 1 suppressor for every three shooters , where all the crime ?

anti gun lies are just that...

The thing I'd like to know is, if you've paid the tax and have the license, are you confined to choose from just certain premanufactured suppressors like they do with full automatic weapons, or can you experiment and make your own?

If you want to make your own, you can. First you get permission, and the tax stamp. Then you make A silencer. It turns out to be a crappy one, that is not very quiet? Too bad, so sad. You want to try again? That requires another 200 dollar tax.

Your question mentions two entirely different things.

>if you've paid the tax and have the license,< The tax is for individuals on each NFA item. It is NOT a license.

The license is for a company that manufactures.

If you want to make them for sale, you need to get a license. If you want to own one (or dozens) for your own use, you need to pay a tax on each and every one.

Two different things.
