hi points? any good?

So I'm helping a friend pick out a gun for self defense and was wondering what quality hi points were. They are DIRT DIRT DIRT cheap so I was iffy on the quality. any body have any experience with them?

you'll get the gun snobs that will tell you horror stories about the hi-points and yes there has been lemons but consider this. smith and wesson has one of the highest recall rates of any other gun company and i don't think anyone would think of them as junk. now to your question the hi-points are thought of very highly by those in the know. ugly as a brick and about the same ergonomics but they work. they have a life time warranty and the company is easy to work with. once upon a time "we" had one as a range rental it worked flawlessly and continues to work after 5000 plus rounds with very few cleaning. if you can get past the ugly and the feel you'll get a lot of bang for the buck

Yes things like that work. Look at the firearms used by Japan in the last days of their power as a nation. It does make you wonder about the U.S.

I own a CF380 and it is flawless. I also now have a 995TS that I bought last weekend and haven't taken to the range yet, but I am sure it will be the same as the .380. I had a C9 that was junk, and I have seen a few .45's that were junk. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one of their .380's or carbines, though.

i have the 380 w/ compensator .... nice gun and isnt so front heavy that u cant leave a good group of shots like the larger bores....... i say yes to hi-point

they may be ugly and heavy but they run. Can't say that about some other manufactures.

There are big, cheap feeling, ugly, and WORK. They work and function really well and have probably the best customer service in the industry.

They go bang when you pull the trigger and were the pistol of choice for the little gang bangers where I was a deputy. They knew how to conceal them in those baggy pants and I am talking full sized 40's and 45's.

Wow, good reviews so far. That kinda surprises me. I almost always see people pounce on hi point right away. I sell them in my shop and alot of people frown on them. I happen to think they are a decent gun, especialy for the money. I personally wouldnt want one for everyday carry due to the bulkiness, but I have heard they can be dependable.

I've been doing alot of research on the Hi-Points recently and I may be picking one up tomorrow at the C&E show in Charlotte, NC. Some people have had feed problems but there is an easy fix (just a slight mod to the magazine).

i do not own one and probably will not ever.now having said that i will tell you i have no nich for one that i dont already have covered,otherwise i would.i have a friend of mine who owns a reloading and gun shop,he sent one back for a customer that i think must of been thrown in his trunk and forgotten.it had quite a bit of surface rust and had no lubricating oil on it that i could see.within 10 days it came back looking like new and running good.i know of no other manufacturer that would do what was done. old semperfi

my friend got one helped him all i could with it . lots of jams . not impressed. i have glocks smiths and ruger dont have them probs. rember its your life! your choise. the feel good of cheep maynot feel good in the end!!! good luck

really enjoy reading threads about Hi Point firearms. I think this one brand of firearm has the same affect on guns snobs as Sarah Palin has on liberals. It drives them absolutely crazy. Comments like "I would rather have a sharp stick to protect myself or my family than a Hi Point firearm" (which I have seem many times posted in Hi point threads) is beyond me. Or another common comment is I'd rather have no gun at all than own a Hi Point.

It also seems to be the most bashed firearm from NON OWNERS on the market. They blow up, they melt, slides fly off at a hundred miles an hour, are so inaccurate that they almost shoot sideways. Some of the stories that non owners of this firearm come up with are bizarro to say the least. Makes for good entertainment though.

if them coments are for me thats ok . i didnot have luck with it. so move on lots of guns out thear to try .when u find one u like and works for u stick with it . im not hear to get in a pissing match . just my thoughts on a question that was asked.!! that is all.

if we are to follow the logic of the failing/junk hi-point all smith and wessons must be junk because of the few sigmas i've encounter that had issues of perhaps the recall of smith and wessons effort to "improve" the walther ppk/ppks series now mean all smiths are junk ??? do i believe that nope just hammering home a point.... lemons happen. sure they may happen more with a low end product like the hi=point but a life time fix it free no questioned asked warranty and the low pice makes this gun a safe bet.... is it a perfect choice nope but not everyone can afford the latest and grestest must have hi-tech 45acp with all the bells and whistles

I am in no hurry to sell my C9. never failed to fire or jam, accurate makes a great truck gun. downside is that it is not pretty and will make your trigger finger a little sore. If 150 to $200 is all you got to spend they are fine. I will keep mine and wouldn't be against buying another if the price was right.

Just had a concealed class this past saturday. One guy broke out a hi-point 45 and was kinda talking it down because of the price. He was saying that was all he could afford. But when it came time to do the live fire, he was tearing the center out of the target with zero failures.

I had a Hi point .40 cal. It was my first gun. It ate everything I feed it, made 2-3 inch groups, had the looks of Rosie O'Donnell running naked, and had the density of a dying star. What a wonderful piece of crap! I'd own it again in a heat-beat. I would never consider it to carry, concealed or open. It's just stupid-heavy. but for a house-gun, it will put an accurately placed hole in an intruder's chest. And a gun you can afford in your hand is much better than a gun you can't afford that's sitting at the store. :-)

I'm sure you've had a guy or two shooting a Kimber that didn't do nearly so well. The difference is almost always the man rather than the machine.

I don't like Hi-Points, but it's not because they fail to function as intended. (A Hi-Point 9mm was the first handgun I ever shot.)

Hi-Points are the Kia of the gun world. Some people don't like them because they're less expensive or they don't look/feel right. A Kia will drive me down the highway at the same 55 MPH as my Ford F-250. I'd always choose the Ford, but it's not because the Kia cobbled-together piece of junk. It's just not what I want, and I have the ability to get what I want instead.

I have a 380, 9mil, 9mil, 40 and 9mil carbine all from hi point. I have other guns as well.

I love shooting the hi points they go bang every time they hit what you point at are heavey and ugly as sin but dang they work great.
