At my advanced and rapidly reaching senility age - a 12 ga. pump with 3" chamber. Very versatile, lots of choices of ammo and loadings - can hunt just about any game (birds, beasts or fowl) in US with it (within range of course) and makes a good self-defense platform. If you expanded that to two - I take a .357 mag revolver - that was initially my first thought - but upon reflection the 12 ga. stays on top IMHO.

Mini 14. Very reliable, fast action, easy ammo, long enough for the longer distance shot but good for self defense in tight area's.

Ya, 12ga pump (3") for 'most versatile'. Need factory stock and pistol grip.
For home defense it is untouchable, even without any shells(not suggested), the sound would deter anyone in the dark. Albeit, I could not even fathom "only one".

The mini - 14 has no collector value and generally sells for under 1 grand - therefore it must be a piece of junk - I know that mine is, although I can't prove it!...
![]() Holy Mother of Pearl - my Mini-14 is such a piece of crap - the site won't allow me to upload a picture! ![]()

AR-15 piston type of some kind (patriot ordinance being the only one I know of), ammo's readily available, Fair in price, decent in stopping power. Other than that next on the list would be a 5.56 version of the SKS, or AK-47.

i thought about it hard. i'd probably pick the mini as well. not as accurate as an ar, but requires less maintenance and sure is robust.

I would have to say 357 revolver range isnt anywhere near a long gun but if SHTF and you were depending on shooting whatever you can scavenge it will shoot 38 or 357 and I have read if modified properly 9mm 38 super and 9x23 as well

My Colt AR-15. I served 6 years in the Army, Infantry, and it is the weapon I can strip, clean, load, fire, correct a malfinction, etc in the dark, half awake, whatever.
Plus those 30 round mags just make me smile as I squeeze and squeeze and......... Chris

I'd pick one of my AR's since they can do almost anything.
This one, LMT with ACOG. ![]()

I would stick to the old, tryed, and true 12ga. Short barrel for SD, long barrel for hunting.

a 12 gauge is more practical but i dont build the same kind of relationship with my shotgun as i do a good lever or six gun.

My choice would be a .357 Mag revolver with a 4 inch barrel. The reason is because it can shoot 38 spl ammo too and if I wanted to conceal carry, it would fit the bill. You just can't hide rifles and shotguns.

Just the thought of that is the pits. It would be like asking me "What is your favorite food?" and meaning that my choice would be all I could have to eat for the rest of my life. OK for a while perhaps but, YUCK!. |

![]() I don't know for sure but I have my doubts that a Mini could go 31,165 rounds without a cleaning. I owned two Mini's and know they didn't like to be gummed up with carbon and unburnt powder. Here's an article that you might find interesting. 31,165 rounds without a cleaning. http://www.bravocompanymfg.com/v/vsp...hy14_oct10.pdf
