rock island 1911 - The Firearms Forum

How is rock island 1911s I never heard of them I know they are cheaper then the Other I think them are around 350 or so but I like the taurus 1911s to I know the are around 450 and up so I am think on just saving up and getting a taurus one day

my dads a big 1911 fan and got rid of his rock island when he got me my Ruger Mark III.

If you're looking for an inexpensive but very good milspec 1911, you can't go wrong. I wouldn't trade mine for a Colt. Mine has fired everything I have put in it without any major issues. It isn't picky about ammo or cleanliness.

Good bang for the buck.

I agree with .45nut, The rocks are fantastic, so are the taurus' for that matter. In fact the only 1911s that really arent up to snuff is the llamas, but even they are somewhat reliable and can be made into fine shooters with a little smithin...

I am just wanting one to shoot here and there I really wish I could aford a colt 1911 but that's way out of my price range right now

well rocks aren't the best but they are good. I mean you can't really go wrong with the 1911 design. It's the Ak of the pistol world.

I had one awhile back. Only reason I sold it was because I wanted something with some more bells & whistles on it. They are good pistols. The one I had functioned flawlessly no matter what I fed it. Great gun too if you want to do a customized build.

If you want to purchase one and leave it in org form, they're ok. If you want to customize one, good luck. I have done 3 and that's enough. Veery much out from mil spec.

well if you want one with lots of bells and whistles I hear the 1911PD is good, nutnfancy has a good review of it. I particularily like the underside rail for mounting lights and lasers... or laser/light combos... does anyone make one of those?

Rock Island is a Philippines made gun by Armscor. It is well made. I have owned three Taurus guns, one Beretta 92 clone, a Winchester Model 63 22LR semi auto rifle clone and a Colt Lightning 45LC pump rifle clone. Both rifles were very problematical and will deter me from buying anything from Taurus ever again. I would not buy their 1911, for sure, based on my bad experience with those two rifles.

I have a Rock Island that I bought to just get the frame (only way to do it in California). I wanted a base for my Marvel 22LR Conversion Unit No. 1. My son-in-law also bought one at the same time just to have a 45ACP 1911. His had extraction problems initially but an adjustment by me of the extractor fixed that. His shoots as good as most 1911's.

I replaced all the internals with 1911 drop-in after market parts. Everything fit except the safety which I had to fit. The result was a good frame with a good trigger for use with the Marvel. I then took the slide and barrel (45ACP) and made a clone of a 1950's Bullseye Match pistol. I fitted a Group Gripper and a tight bushing along with a Bomar full length rib. This version shoot great and is more accurate than I ever expected it to be. In fact its accuracy with the original barrel is excellent.

Are the GSG 1911's made of steel like the Rock Island or some other metal???

I honestly don't know but if it is not steel then it is not of the same durability as the RI's (????).

Anyone know?

I have two Rock Island 1911s, one in 9mm and the other in .45 and I also have a Taurus. The only problem I have with the RIA is that they both shoot high and that can be fixed. The 9mm in at the gunsmiths now having new sights being put on. The Taurus is an excellent gun and is the best shooting 1911 that I have and I have 5 of them.

I won't be shoot it a lot I ain't very good with a pistol so I am wanting one that I could practice with and I always wanted a 1911

after handling them both I was at a 50/50 draw, but the trigger out of the box was much nicer on my RIA! the taurus wasn't bad but that darned RIA was almost as nice as some of my colts and kimbers. It was also more accurate "probably cuz of the trigger" I was holding baseball groups at 25 yards which is really good for me. Thems fightin words! I believe you have confused the 1911 for a glock... 1911s are elegant and classy platforms for delivering 230 gr projectiles. kinda like fine china, you dont serve T bones on dixie ware...

glocks are the AK of the pistol world, kinda like the cheap tupperware you eat leftover macaroni from...

trust me, once you own a 1911 you will shoot it as much as your wallet will allow you too...

the differences in trigger is because the rocks are of series 70 design and the taurus' are of series 80.

My taurus can be considered a semi custom pistol, and will hold a 8 round 1 holer at 25 yds, and shot quite well right from the box before I even began mucking with it...

If you're just practicing with it, like just doing some range shooting, get the ATI GSG .22LR one. That's going to be the least expensive to shoot.

Or a lot of places have .22LR conversion kits for a normal .45-caliber 1911.

Essentially the same gun as a RIA. Both are made by Armscor. I've own a Citadel and two Taurus 1911s. I sold the Citadel because I had several problems with it. I traded my first blued Taurus for a stainless Taurus. I've got 4000 rounds through my stainless Taurus and I've had it for several years now. It's seen some punishment but I've never had a single problem with it. Taurus really edges out Armscor when you consider that Taurus offers a stainless model and Armscor doesn't.

Both are great values and give you a lot of gun for a relatively small amount of money.

My opinion wasn't ment to knock the Taurus. It was simply ment to say why spend $150 or more dollars more when they are at least equal (even though I tend to favor the RIA) The Taurus 1911 is the finest gun Taurus has ever made IMO.
