Funny, it doesnt matter what pistol you ask about, you get a 50-50 review. If one person has owned one problem pistol of any brand, they swear off of them and label them all junk. I think rock islands are decent and the taurus comes already customized so to speak with the triggers and hammers and such. Both are good shooters, but I would give the edge to taurus. But, I would outshoot them both with an outa the box high standard for under 5 bills. See, told you everyone has their own opinion.

Alas, the great debate continues! It is true that you will get a myriad of different opinions regarding the various gun manufacturers. I have had to send back a Taurus, a Springfield, and an FNP-9 due to issues. I had good customer service with each and have no ax to grind with any of them. As far as the 1911 I do think that it is a disease or at least becomes one. You get the first one and man does it point and shoot really well. Then, lets say you start with the traditional 5" gun. Well, you just have to try the Commander size and oh yes there are the 3" concealed carry little guys as well. Then there are different finishes, different options, and it goes on!!! There is no cure to date either!!!! So, never think that just having a 1911 to shoot at the range is all that it will be. Once you are stricken, you will have to have another, and another, and another....!
Good luck. If the RIA satisfies your needs right now go for it. Just be prepared for the sickness!!!

The Taurus comes wth just about everything needed to be a great pistol and I have several folks near me that just love them. I have done custom work on Paras, Colts, Norincos, SAs and Kimbers. I seldom use drop-in parts and almost always go with Wilson products. The first RIA I did caused me great consternation but I didn't think much about it as they were fairly new to the marketplace and as such might be expected. Then I had a father and son who bought them in different states and wanted considerable custom work done and made into "twin" pistols. The exact same problems I had with the first one resurfaced. Mostly it was with pin holes misaligned that made me do considerable cutting and fitting to make work. Thumb and grip controls were way out. This may have changed lately. The RIAs functioned and shot well in org form but it seemed to me that they had a differeent spec sheet to work from if you wanted to change anything. The 80 series type triggers constitute about .5lb added pull. If the trigger work is done properly, the average shooter would have a hard time telling the diff one to the other. While I like the 70s better, the 80s are not a problem to anyone that knows how to do the work properly.

Yea, I own a taurus 1911. Flawless operation (once I went to wilson combat mags) and a real tac driver. I have a couple colts and I am trying to find a new s&w sc commander E series. But if I was strapped for cash, I would probably opt for the high standard. My AR-15 is a high standard, and can stack rounds on top of each other at 100 yds. They are well made and under rated. Now, someone who has had a problem with one will probably disagree. But, dollar for dollar, they are better than most in their price range.

Some may disagree, but I think these materials are perfectly acceptable for a .22 LR plinker. It's not going to hold up for a 10mm for sure, but we're not talking about anything near the beating that the larger, heavier loads put on a gun.

If you have ever seen a Zinc gun after years of use, the term throwaway gun has meaning. Zinc wears poorly compared to aluminum and steel and is low in strength. While 22LR ammunition is low impact compared to even 38 Special, it is not low impact compared to the normal uses of zinc products in the automobile and other industries as decoration pieces.
But we all get to choose and I would choose a gun to match the durability of some of the military guns, Colts, Remingtons, and Winchesters I have, made in the 1800's and early 1900's. LDBennett |

I don't expect it to hold up like forged steel, but we don't treat it like forged steel, either.

i am in the process of doing quite a lot of work to my rock island basic.
i have a friend thats a machinist but has not done much pistol work and he's enjoying it as much as i am. already done new sights ![]() ![]() rear of slide grooved for anti glare ![]() front cocking serrations matched in type of cut but slightly reduced in size ![]() i countersunk/beveled the slide lock lever hole myself and flushed the slide lock with the frame and radiused it ![]() and i've also done quite a lot of de-horning edges on the frame and slide with hand files and emery cloth ( 320 grit ) about to be done new trigger hammer sere high rise wilson beavertail ed brown bobtailed mainspring housing ( i LOVE bobtails ) extended tactical safety and i will be fitting a new match barrel and bushing myself, but i haven't decided if i'll get the wilson or ed brown yet i love this gun and feel it's an EXCELLENT platform for custom 1911 building

and i also added an ed brown 2 piece guide rod, but don't keep it in much because i am going to have it worked on to add 1" long cuts at the end so i can break it down for disassembly with OUT the allen wrench.
i am one of those that believe one of the greatest things about the 1911 is the fact that it can be completely disassembled using no actual tools but just it's own parts.

Wow, that's a good price on that. Just looked it up. I'd actually consider parting with the cash for my first 1911 for that little. Same price as my last Glock. Cool.

Yea, I was hoping to get at least one person fussing about the high standard. The facts are, they are also made in the philipines and are cousins to the rock island. They really seem like decent guns for the money. Now, high standard is not the same company now as they were when they made the 22 supermatics and such. The company is based in Houston Tx I believe, and is making some of their product there. So, I am not sure if they actually make different versions of the 1911, but the ones I sell in my store for 419.00 are philipino made and I think by armscor as well. They are good shooters, but I am no expert on the metals or how long they last. I do own a high standard AR-15 that is a great shooter and appears to be made well.

I really like the looks of the ATI 45MIL and the Rock Island A1 Parkerized.......REALLY like the price......I remember when I had to qualify with the Military issue .45 I wasn't a very good shot.....didn't get much practice with it though.

Centerfire systems still has the basic models in 9mm, and .45. for $379.99, and the 38 super for 10 bucks less. They all seem to be out of stock right now, though.

Cool Beans. If all of them are anything like mine they're the best bang for the buck. You can spend a lot more and get a lot less gun.

So does Centerfire Systems but by the time you pay shipping and FFL fees it's not that much difference, plus there's no waiting.
